The Society may from time to time approach a Canadian dignitary who has exhibited an interest in heritage and/or genealogical research and invite that person to be the Honorary Patron of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The purpose of this position is to enhance the distinction, prestige and authority of the Society.
Honorable Peter Milliken, UE, BA, MA, LLB
Peter Milliken, born and raised in Kingston, is a graduate of Queen's University and Dalhousie University. Crossing the Atlantic, he also earned a MA in Jurisprudence from Oxford University. He was called to the Bar in 1973.
He was first elected Member of Parliament for Kingston-and-the-Islands in 1988 and was returned by voters in each election until he retired at the 2011 General Election, making him the longest-serving MP in Kingston’s history. In 2001 he was elected Speaker of the House of Commons. Holding that position until he retired in 2011 made him the longest-serving Speaker in Canadian history.
On the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Milliken was recently appointed to The Privy Council of Canada by the Governor General.
Peter now functions as Senior Advisor with the firm Cunningham Swan and as a Fellow in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University at Kingston.
