Clickable Given Names
Note that we give married women and widows a separate link line for the maiden name ( if known )
Also note that for SMITH William Henry the logic sets up William and Henry as separate clickable links.
If several persons with the same given name are in the same category, county, township, or file you will find little up and down arrows to the right of a given name. Clicking on a down arrow jumps ahead to the next entry with that person's name. Clicking on an up arrow takes you back to the previous. Arrow clicks are very fast because your computer bounces entirely within the file that is already downloaded and on your screen.

Please contact John Allan at 1-705-983-4341 or allanj@eastlink.com if you see obvious errors or have ideas on exactly what should happen when we click on a given name.
One option is to use the first 3 letters as a wild card so clicking on SMITH Eli will bounce through SMITH Elijah SMITH Elisa SMITH Elisabeth SMITH Eliza SMITH Elizabeth .
Option two is to give every person already in OGSPI a separate entry in the on-line equivalent of a Toronto phone book ( 1.6 million names so far ). Clicking on SMITH Ann will take you to the first SMITH Ann entry in the sequence.
Option three is to clone each marriage record, census family, birth announcement, etc by individual names.
Option four is to make every file a linked list with NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons for each person.
Option five is the best one but we haven't even thought of it yet. - IDEAS PLEASE ! ! !

Effective February 2009 the OGSPI sorting/indexing/uploading software is restructured to satisy a number of privacy concerns.
Cutoff dates are :
Census 1911 ( same as Library & Archives Canada )
Births 1912 ( same as Ontario Vital Statistics )
Marriages 1927 ( same as Ontario Vital Statistics )
Deaths 1937 ( same as Ontario Vital Statistics )
War & Military 1953 ( end of Korean War )
   Other Categories 1940
Search engines like Google will probably still point to directories and files within OGSPI where newer information used to be.

Normally as Genealogical researchers we each go backwards in time generation by generation seeking details for :

   2 parents
   4 grand parents
   8 great grand parents
   16 great great grand parents
32 great great great grand parents
As a practical consideration - we do not have the volunteer or financial resources to computerize and index every name in every newspaper and handwritten document from earliest Ontario settlement through to 2009. The doubling relationship should remind present and future volunteers that it makes sense in a restructured Ontario Genealogical Society Provincial Index to focus our efforts on transcibing and adding favorite older sources like the census and the publicly available years of Ontario Vital Statistcs.

New Linking Software - July 2008 Test Upload

The original 1997 OGSPI Mission Statement was Doing Every Ontario Family - Plus Ancestors - Plus Descendants.
As computer technology evolved from 386 to 486 to Pentium the Mission Statement expanded to Doing Every Ontario Family - Plus Ancestors - Plus Descendants, ( with Maiden Names and Total Cross References ).
One OGS member commented "Always aim high. Then you can't shoot yourself in the foot."
We still need more volunteer typists to get to Every Ontario Family but the late June and early July 2008 uploads celebrate a major step towards Total Cross References in the text to html conversion logic. Try Grattan Township 1851 census to test drive the new linking software. You can click any surname on the current screen to jump to that surname in the All Categories master index. Note also that the cross references even work across name changes like COYN/COYNE and McMASTER/McMASTON.
Please contact OGSPI team leaders John and Lynda Allan if you find a scrambled entry or bad link.
