WITHERS, Eileen Anne (née TRAYNOR)
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eileen WITHERS, after a short and courageous battle with lung cancer. On Friday, June 13th, she died peacefully with her husband and two children by her side in hospital in Halifax, age 61. A woman whose journey through life blended several families in many locations, including homes in Scotland, England, Gatineau in Quebec, Ottawa, Halifax, Toronto and finally retirement in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Daughter of proud parents Harry TRAYNOR and Katherine (née GILL) of Halifax. Beloved wife and best friend of Thomas (Ted) WITHERS. Cherished mother of Sarah (Keith BENNETT, Toronto) and Adam MAHONEY (Kendra HURSHMAN, Windsor.) Dear stepmother of Rob MAHONEY (Tracey SLITER, Ottawa), Paul WITHERS (Judy MYRDEN, Halifax) and Carolyn (Andy HEARD, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia). Precious sister of Ian (Ottawa) and Gordon (Halifax), she was predeceased by her sister Christine (Bryan UNSWORTH, York). Eileen will be sadly missed by her extended family and Friends in the United Kingdom, the U.S. and throughout Canada. Born in Greenock, Scotland, her family moved to England before she started school. An avid sportswoman and student, tennis and grass-hockey were balanced by studying mathematics and chemistry, eventually completing an honours degree in Economics at the University of London. In 1968, shortly after arriving in Canada, she realized that her French skills, learned in England, were not sufficient so she enrolled in a French ski school. That way, she could learn to ski and speak French at the same time. Her strong work ethic and commitment to efficiency helped propel her into senior policy roles in several federal government departments, and trade negotiator for International Trade Commission. Eileen was truly a remarkable and multifaceted woman whose interests included her pets, wine making and antiques. Always fond of puzzles and games, the complexity of duplicate bridge enchanted her. She was a Life Master, certified as both a director and teacher. She also judged competitive debating teams. A collector by nature she attended estate auctions most weekends. Travel often centred around a theme, first bridge tournaments, then 'collecting' state capital domes in the United States, and finally, viewing paintings by Vermeer in museums around the world. Her love of art was shared with Ted. In recent years, her generosity led her to volunteer with seniors at the Windsor Elms, especially in the Palliative Care Unit. An active member of her church, she was a Eucharistic Minister. Funeral mass and celebration of life were held in Windsor, Nova Scotia In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or your local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Shelter. Private messages of condolence can be made in the 'Guest Book' at: She met each challenge in her path with grace and wisdom and it was the gift of herself that she gave to others.

Man charged in fatal shooting
By Anthony CAPUANO, Page A11
Three days after a Scarborough apartment shooting left two men dead and a third in hospital, detectives working on the case have charged one man, but remain cautious about drawing conclusions.
When officers from 43 Division arrived at the apartment buildings at 1360 Danforth Ave. at around 1: 35 on Friday afternoon, they found Tyler RAULSTEN, 18, and Adrian McFARLANE, 19, dead amid signs of a shooting that played out over three floors of the 16-floor building.
A 23-year old man, who has not been identified, was taken to Sunnybrook Health Science Centre with gunshot wounds but is now said to be in stable condition.
Mikhail MYRIE, 19, who lives in apartment 1401, where police believe the shooting broke out, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Mr. McFARLANE. However, he has not been charged in connection with the death of Mr. RAULSTEN.
