GRASHAM, Wilbur Edward Laughton (1916-2008)
Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto
Peacefully, in his 92nd year, at the Wellesley Central Place on Wednesday, January 16, 2008. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, Anne (Nee FURNIVALL.) Loving father of Cleone (Tim BURNS,) Rachel (and the late Ian MacKAY) and Thomas (Tharwat AWAMLEH.) Dear Pappa of Maya, Lucy and Abby. Wilbur was born in Seattle, Washington, but called Toronto his home from the age of eight. A graduate of the University of Toronto (Engineering Physics) in 1939, Wilbur worked during World War 2 as a geophysicist, and for the National Research Council of Canada developing antisubmarine devices. Subsequently he returned to the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics to study political economy. He lectured at a number of Canadian Universities and was Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Toronto from 1960 until he retired, including serving as Chair of Graduate Studies for the Political Science Department. Wilbur had a gentle, kind and generous disposition with a dry sense of humour. He enjoyed teaching and mentoring his students. A true academic with a wide field of interests, his curiosity and imagination were unlimited and he avidly pursued knowledge and learning throughout his life. Wilbur was an inventor of gadgets, a talented carpenter and an amateur photographer and star gazer. He enjoyed swimming and reading poetry, mysteries and texts on advanced mathematics. He had an open mind and a strong sense of justice. He will be fondly remembered as a loving and indulgent husband and father, who enjoyed telling stories. Friends may gather after 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008 followed by a memorial service at 2: 00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Trinity Square, Toronto; behind the Eaton's Centre. Donations can be made in Wilbur's memory to the Heart and Stroke foundation or the charity of your choice.
