Youth, 17, found in Ausable River
By Debora VAN BRENK, Sun Media, Tues., January 15, 2008
The body of a missing Crediton teenager has been found in the Ausable River.
Provincial police say their underwater search and recovery unit found the body of 17-year-old Ryan VANVALKENGOED about 12: 30 p.m. yesterday.
VANVALKENGOED was reported missing Friday night when he didn't return home from a friend's house in Crediton. It would ordinarily be a 10-minute walk.
His hat was found Saturday between his friend's house and a bridge spanning the Ausable River.
He was found in the river "just south of the bridge," said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Joanna VAN MIERLO.
Police launched a search by boat, air and land -- including a diver team and dog-rescue teams -- in a systematic search for the popular teen.
The cause of death has yet to be determined.
Police are warning people to steer clear of both riverbanks and waterways.
Meanwhile, William YATES, a London man last seen a week ago near his home near the Thames River, is still missing. Searchers have turned up no sign of him and police continue to investigate.
His disappearance is believed unrelated to a body found in the woods in East London on Sunday. Hikers found the body, which had been in the woods for some time.
London police have confirmed the body is that of a male but weren't releasing more information until an autopsy, scheduled for yesterday, could be completed.
