EIDT, James Kenneth " Jim"
Broadcast journalist, documentary filmmaker, old timers' hockey player, Toronto Maple Leafs fan, husband, cat daddy. Born December 16, 1955, in London, Ontario Died September 8 in Venice, Italy, aged By Michael MAITLAND, Page L8
Jim EIDT's lack of ego was probably best reflected by his business attire, which usually consisted of shorts, running shoes and a well-worn hockey old-timers' golf shirt.
A graduate of the journalism program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Jim began his career in Alberta where he honed his craft working in Lethbridge, Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton.
In Calgary he met Nancy. They married and in 1990 moved to Victoria where Jim turned his energies into making Pan Productions Ltd.
While corporate and government videos and post-production services kept the doors at Pan open, television production was his true passion.
His pride in being a Canadian was equalled by his commitment to telling Canadian stories.
There was a time, or so the story goes, when his niece lamented about "Canadian" television. Jim outlined the merits of, and the need for, Canadian television and by the end his niece had become a fan.
Jim will perhaps be best remembered for Terry Fox Remembered, a film he dedicated to the memory of his mother, the late Shirley EIDT, the former Scarborough councillor who welcomed Mr. Fox to Toronto.
Other productions include the award-winning Crowded at the Bottom and the television series Good to Go, about the trials and tribulations of producing a Canadian feature film.
His ability in the editing suite was matched by his extraordinary skill with a pen, his love of literacy and his passion for hockey.
Jim's dedication to the Maple Leafs never waned and he would try to get into a Leafs game whenever he was in Toronto on film business.
Ever health-conscious, Jim played for two old-timer teams in Victoria, the Silver Bullets and the Pharma Kings.
On more than one occasion while working with him, I would catch him eyeing the clock.
We had work to do but, equally as important, the puck was about to drop. Jim had it timed just right so he could be out the door and on the ice in 15 minutes.
Yet his greatest passion wasNancy, his wife of 27 years. Their mutual love of travel took them to Europe whenever possible.
It was during the first week of a month-long vacation to Europe that Jim suffered a fatal heart attack.
Jim EIDT was above all a man of rock-solid integrity. He will be dearly missed by Friends and family, but most of all by his loving wife and cats Ruffian and Elmo.
Michael MAITLAND co-produced several films with Jim EIDT.
