Suspect was all-star dunker
By Gail SWAINSON and Madhavi Acharya-Tom YEW, Staff Reporters
His Friends called him Sprinz for his big-bounce slam dunk on the high school basketball court.
Shelton McKENZIE, a former hoops all-star, was shot dead by York Regional Police in Thornhill Thursday as he allegedly tried to mow them down with a stolen pickup while fleeing a botched home invasion.
Investigators say McKENZIE and Kevin HARRIS forced their way into the posh Thornhill home of Mike and Bev THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON early Thursday and roughed up the couple.
Their terrifying ordeal came to a quick end after their teenage son, who managed to hide from the invaders, called 911 to summon help.
Police rushed to the scene, only to confront two men as they attempted to drive off in the THOMPSONs' truck.
Officers fired at the vehicle, killing McKENZIE and bringing the bullet-riddled truck to a stop on the lawn of a home across the street, McKENZIE slumped over the seat.
HARRIS, who was slightly wounded by police gunfire before running off, was found 90 minutes later about a kilometre away.
While the victim has yet to be formally named by police, Friends and family positively identified him as McKENZIE.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which probes all deaths involving police, has been called in.
HARRIS, 26, of Ajax, was charged Friday with five counts of armed robbery, 10 counts of forcible confinement and five counts of wearing a disguise.
The charges include the Thornhill incident and home invasion-style robberies over the last few months in Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Toronto.
McKENZIE had attended J. Clarke Richardson high school in Ajax in 2004 he finished second in the slam contest at the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association's all-star games.
