VILA, Helen Jeanette
59, died on Sunday, July 6, 2003, at her home in Scotch Hill, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Alan P. VILA and Jeanette (McVICAR) VILA. Helen attended schools in Chippawa, Ontario, and Baldwin, New York, where she excelled in sports and music. She graduated with Honours in English from McGill University and with a master teacher certificate from the Ontario College of Education at the University of Toronto. For several years, Helen taught English at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and film arts at Sheridan College in Toronto. Later, she and her late companion Trini PEREZ had a home craft business in woodworking and jewelry in Stoney Creek, Ontario, which they continued in Pictou. In recent years, Helen sang in the Hosannah Gospel Choir at the United Church of Canada, Lyons Brook, served as a volunteer at the Maritime Odd Fellows home, and worked at the job placement center and the library. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Mary SHAW and her husband Robert of Palo Alto, California; John VILA and his partner Terry BISHOP of Guttenberg, New Jersey; James VILA and his wife Tanya of Tilton, New Hampshire; Elizabeth ROGAN and her husband Edward of Glastonbury, Connecticut; and Anne VILA and her husband Steven JACOBS of Needham, Massachusetts; and by five nieces -- Catherine VILA, Carolyn ROGAN, Jenny ROGAN, Julia JACOBS, and Anne ROGAN; four nephews -- Mark SHAW, Andrew SHAW, Jonathan SHAW and Daniel JACOBS; four grandnieces -- Jessica, Kaeli, Alissa and Zo; one grandnephew -- Max; and two stepnieces -- Tracy MESSINGER and Kerri PACHOMOW. Helen will be dearly missed by her companion, Margaret MacCULLOCH, who cared for her during her long illness. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at the McLaren Funeral Home, 246 Faulkland Street, Pictou. The funeral will be held at the United Church in Lyons Brook at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, Mary MacDERMID officiating. Interment at the Scotch Hill Cemetery will be followed by a reception at the church hall. Her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society -- Nova Scotia Division, the Humane Society of Canada, or to Palliative Care of the Aberdeen Hospital.

Sherry Fraser KEARY June 16, 1920 - February 25, 2003
Died peacefully in her sleep at home early Tuesday morning. Beloved wife of Douglas, mother of Stephen (Diane), Gail, Marcia (Greg), grandmother of Emma, Alec, Holly, Rosalee, sister of David, Robert and Jessie. She will be sadly missed by her caregiver Emma VILLANUEVA of 7 years and also Kamila ISMAIL. She was a valiant spirit, an inspiration to many, and in her day a sailing champion, a gourmet cook, a fabulous gardener, a fashion trend setter, a lover of animals and nature, and the belle of the ball. She will be sorely missed by all those who loved her dearly for the flamboyant, funny, feisty and loving being that she was. Friends may call at the Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, at Windermere, east of the Jane subway, on Thursday February 27, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held in the chapel on Friday, February 28, 2003 at 1 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to the Toronto Humane Society or to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to the Ontario Track 3 Ski Association for the Disabled.

Beloved husband of Marion (Lucy) VILLEMERE of Sudbury. Loving father of Marilyn LOGAN (husband William SMITH) of Manitowaning, Robert "Bob" of Sudbury and Margaret LANTHIER (husband Wilfrid) of Tecumseh. Cherished grandfather of Joanne GABOR (husband George) of Windsor, Tammy LANTHIER of Toronto, Sharon WHYNOTT of Halifax, Peter WHYNOTT of Sudbury and great grandchildren Shawn, Matthew, Emily, Tayler and Sydney. Dear son of John and Cora May VILLEMERE both predeceased. Dear brother of John, Otto, George, Grace, Holden, Orval, Ian, Gerald, Dorothy and Edna, all predeceased. Funeral Service was held on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at the R.J. Barnard Chapel, Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury.

Died peacefully at home in Peterborough, February 24, 2003 after a glorious life of 92 years. Lauretta was the beloved wife of the late Melville C. THURLING. She is survived by her adoring family and her children, Peter and Lynne, their spouses Joan SCHAFER and John TREILHARD, grandchildren - Pier and Zoe THURLING, Kevin and Shane QUINN, Sydney GRIFFITH, Marieke TREILHARD and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Hector VILLENEUVE and by her sister Connie ADAM/ADAMS. Lauretta was a magical matriarch never to be forgotten by her family and many Friends. Funeral Mass to be celebrated Friday, February 28, 3: 00 p.m. (visitation one hour prior) by Father Rudolph VILLENEUVE and Father Cleary VILLENEUVE at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 1066 Western Ave. (at Clonsilla Ave.) Peterborough.
