SLEEMAN, Hilda B. -- (Formerly of Whitby) Peacefully, after a short illness, at Lakeridge Health-Oshawa, on December 26th, 2002, in her 99th year. Predeceased by her parents James and Helena SLEEMAN. She often spoke fondly of Kendal, her birth place and later moved with her parents to the family farm in Oshawa on Farewell Avenue. She started in the retail business as a teenager, first at Gerrows store across from the Pedlar plant in Oshawa, then obtaining a job as a sales lady at Ward's Dry Goods, where she worked for a number of years eventually buying the goods for her department. An opportunity came along to buy a similar business in Whitby. She purchased the building and operated successfully, until her retirement, the Hilda B. Sleeman Ladies Wear and Dry Goods Store. After retirement Miss SLEEMAN kept busy with her many interests including Ruddy General Hospital Auxiliary (now Lakeridge Health-Whitby), her garden, visiting shut ins and driving others, making her special white chocolates, which she was so generous in giving. Miss SLEEMAN was able to live in her Whitby home until the fall of 2001 at which time she moved to Whitecliffe Terrace Retirement Residence, where, thanks to the excellent staff, she was able to enjoy many of the activities including several excursions. Thanks to the 9th floor staff at Lakeridge Health-Oshawa for their dedicated time and care during Hilda's brief illness. Friends may call at Oshawa Funeral Service ''Thornton Chapel'' 847 King St. West for visitation on Tuesday, December 31st from 11: 30 a.m. until time of Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Interment Mount Lawn Cemetery. Memorial Donations to the Harmony United Church or Hospital for Sick Children Foundation would be appreciated.
