PAVLAKIS, Smaro -- Peacefully, at the Hellenic Home for Seniors, on Thursday, December 19, 2002, in her 107th year. Smaro was predeceased by her husband Peter. Loving and dear mother of Nicholas Pavlakis PAUL and his wife Clara. Cherished and beloved grandmother of Peter and his wife Irene, Nico and his wife Caterina, Andrew and his wife Kerri. Great-grandmother of Nicholas and Aiden GEORGE. Sister of Despina EFSTATHIOU of Akron, Ohio and aunt of Dorothy EFSTATHIOU. Mrs. Smaro PAVLAKIS (PAUL) was one of the pioneers of the Greek Community in Toronto. She devoted herself to the Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek Community, and was the first teacher of the Greek language in Toronto. In addition, she was an organizer of the annual parade in celebration of the National Holiday of March 25th. Smaro served as a model and splendid example of the Greek immigrants' successful achievement in maintaining and preserving the tradition of the homeland, as well as fulfilling the role of a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her philosophy was always to educate those who are interested in education and to help serve the needs of people. Her services to the Greek Community were exemplary as she strived with her exuberance and vitality to fill the hearts of all her many students with the fire and love of God and the desire to build and develop a better human society built on love, peace and warmly human qualities. Smaro constantly displayed a great concern for human dignity and social justice, which made her a greatly loved person. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (South of Eglinton Avenue East), from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday. Service will be held at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, 115 Bond Street, on Monday at 10 o'clock. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Hellenic Home for Seniors, 215 Tyrell Avenue, Toronto M6G 4A8 or the Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy, 86 Overlea Boulevard, Toronto M4H 1C6.
