"BLO" 2002 Obituary

BLOEM o@ca.on.york_county.toronto.toronto_star 2002-12-21 published
BLOEM, Gerard -- With family close by, Gerard passed away suddenly, on Thursday, December 19, 2002, in his 82nd year, after a dramatic decline due to acute leukemia, undiagnosed until his last day. Gerard is survived by his children, Vincent, Gregory, Rita, Mary, Judy, and twelve grandchildren. He will join his beloved wife Vera, who he lost a year and a half ago and dearly missed. A long standing and devout member of St. Edward's Parish in Willowdale, Gerard will be remembered for his ready wit and resourceful spirit. Gerard did indeed ''whistle while he worked,'' and enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction that came from solving difficult problems. Over the years, he fixed countless bicycles, designed and built unique furniture, and innumerable picture frames, and tended large, flourishing gardens. His love-hate relationship with his computer was well known and he persisted with the ''family tree'' and photo Compact Disk's well after many others would have given up. The family will welcome visitors at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles), on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. A short tribute will be held at 3 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Edward's (75 Churchill Ave.), on Monday, December 23 at 11 a.m. Interment. A lunch reception will be held afterwards in the parish hall. Everyone who knew Gerard or his family is welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Gerard would be appreciated.
