McARTHUR, William Henry " Harry"
Died peacefully June 18th at Georgetown, in his 98th year. Predeceased a year ago, by his beloved wife, Clara, and previously by his brother Jack, and sisters Jessie, Christine, Jeannette, and Margaret. Lovingly remembered by daughters Mary Lou BROCK (Doug,) and Sue GRANT, grandchildren Steven GRANT, Alison, David, and John Paul (Erin) BROCK, great-granddaughter Madison Belle BROCK, and many nieces and nephews. Harry was born and grew up in the village of Woodville, Ontario, where he went to school with his future life partner, Clara. He played ball and hockey, and remained a fan until the last days of his life. Harry worked for Ontario Hydro for 45 years in many different communities, starting as a lineman, and progressing to the level of area manager. Moving to Peterborough after retirement, Harry and Clara quickly became involved in the community; they enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross, and Meals on Wheels, and were active members of Trinity United Church. They played bridge, curled, skated, traveled both in Canada and abroad, relaxed at their cottage on Pigeon Lake, and made a lot of Friends with whom they continued to keep in touch. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Harry's life will be held in the chapel at Trinity United Church, 360 Reid Street, Peterborough at 2: 00 p.m. on Monday, June 26th, 2006. Dad loved to sing; he was a member of many church choirs and other singing groups during his life. He joined in enthusiastically when there was an opportunity to sing the "old songs" or familiar hymns. We remember fondly car rides with the four of us belting out "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" or "In the Little Red School-house". He sang for his care-givers at Extendicare, and his strong baritone (still in tune) dominated many singsongs (he knew all the words). To honour him, raise your voice in song - in the shower, on the street, in church - and remember him, a man who lived simply but well, who loved and was loved, who enjoyed life. If you prefer, you may make a donation to the choir of Trinity United Church, 360 Reid Street, Peterborough, K9J 7G6, or to some other musical group that you wish to support. Arrangements by the Comstock Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough.

GRANT, Joy Angela (BEDSON) (21 September 1929-09 January 2006)
Joy was born in Winnipeg and educated at Rupertsland Ladies College and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. Joy's love of horses led her to leave Canada to join the Thoroughbred Record where she became a syndicated horseracing journalist and pedigree- specialist in Lexington, Kentucky. E.P. TAILOR/TAYLOR enticed her back to Canada where she joined his National Stud Farm in Oshawa. While there she met and married the love of her life, Dr. Guthrie GRANT in 1951. In the 1970s Joy worked with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Association and later assisted with the bloodstock catalogues with Canadian Yearling Sales. Joy was the first woman appointed to Ontario's Racing Commission. Manitoba remained a part of her life - her annual pilgrimage to Victoria Beach for the warm companionship of summer Friends and the glorious sunsets over the lake were very special to her. Deerhounds were a central focus for Joy in later years. Joy and Guthrie travelled the continent for many years accompanied by their various deerhound companions. Joy's skills and energies in planning and volunteer work were well known. Her passions included a variety of sight hound and 'doggy' activities, church, politics, and her love of a good argument - she lived a full life (and yes, she wore purple!). Survived by her four children Iain (Heather, Alasdair and David), Jane (Alexander, Fraser and Sarah), Gail and Donald (Marsha, Rachel, Bekah and Samuel). In addition, she will be missed by her beloved deerhounds. The family offers its sincere appreciation for the excellent care provided by the medical and nursing staff at the Lakeridge Health Centre Oshawa, the Brooklin Medical Centre and the support of her many Friends. A memorial gathering will take place at the Brooklin Memorial Chapel, 79 Baldwin Street on Friday 13 January, 14h00-18h00. A High Requiem Mass will be held in celebration of her life at Saint Thomas Anglican Church in Brooklin, Ontario: 15h00 Saturday 14 January. A reception will follow at the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Joy's memory, to the Saint Thomas Anglican Church, Brooklin, The Mission to Seafarers or the Canadian Cancer Society.

She was predeceased by her father Philip NUTTER. To all of Liz's Friends who loved her, you are her family as well and we know that you will miss her as deeply. Liz achieved a tremendous amount during her life. She is remembered for her determination to stand up for the rights of those without a voice, for her passion for books and making them accessible to everyone, for the pleasure she took in travel and her admiration of different cultures, and most fondly for her deep love and appreciation of family and Friends. Liz gave wholeheartedly to her Friends and always held them dear. She was so grateful for all of the love and support that she received over the past months - every call, every card, every flower and every prayer was deeply cherished and gave her added strength. Liz was born in Winnipeg in 1951, later moving to the Ottawa area with her family. She graduated with an Honours Degree in Public Administration from Carleton University in Ottawa and pursued further study on scholarship at the Syracuse University School of Public Administration, New York. Liz raised her family and spent most of her career in Toronto. She returned to Winnipeg in 2000. Liz's deeply rooted sense of fairness and social justice led to a career as ombudsperson with distinguished service at Carleton University, the University of Toronto, Ryerson Polytechnic University and the Ontario College of Art and Design. For the past five years she worked in Winnipeg as a Senior Investigator with the Office of the National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman. She was a founding member and a past president of the Association of Canadian College and University Ombudspersons. She was also a founding member of The Forum of Canadian Ombudsman and remained actively involved as a member of the Board. The opportunity to volunteer with diverse groups and individuals in the community gave her great pleasure. For over twenty years Liz was committed to keeping the public library systems strong and maintaining public access to information while preserving individual privacy. She was past president of the Ontario Public Library Association and on behalf of this Association and the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Communications chaired the development of the Ontario Public Library Strategic Plan. She contributed as a committee chair to the development of Winnipeg's Millennium Library. A special joy was in representing Canada as keynote speaker (National Information Policies: Canadian Approach) at the 49th International Federation for Information and Documentation Conference and Congress held in Jaipur and New Delhi, India. Liz's leadership, service and commitment toward the betterment of her local, provincial, national and global communities have been highly recognized. She was honoured with many awards from the organizations with which she worked. Commendations were received from both the Prime Minister and the Governor General of Canada. Liz believed in living each day to the fullest. She travelled extensively with her family throughout North and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. She enjoyed diverse activities including book clubs, cultural festivals, cinema, theatre, live music and billiards. Most recently Liz's quiet time was spent at her dream retreat Skye Cottage, Victoria Beach. Our lives are richer for having known Liz. She touched and contributed to the lives of many. The family invites Friends to share in a remembrance and celebration of Liz's life at the Renaissance Hotels Northern Lights Ballroom in the Rogers Centre, Toronto on Saturday, February 11th at 1: 30 p.m. This is the site where Liz hosted the initial visionary meeting of the future Ontario Digital Library.
