Glen Evans, passed away peacefully in Chatham after a short illness on Wednesday, February 9, 2005, in his 91st year. A native of Chatham Township, he resided in Chatham-Kent all his life and served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939 to 1945 on the H.M.C.S. Pictou. He is survived by his wife Christena (GILLESPIE) PUGH and his three children: Brenda CAMPBELL (and her husband Bernie) of Windsor, Vaughn PUGH (and his wife Martine) of Chatham and Patricia PLELI (and her husband Phil) of Windsor. Loving and proud grandfather of Ian, Peter and Jamie CAMPBELL, Colin and Kyla PUGH and Jillian and Christopher PLELI. Brother of the late Helen BURLOCK of London, Willard PUGH of Chatham Township and Owen PUGH of Dorchester. Survived by sisters-in-law Janet and Beatrice PUGH, Donna (Ralph) HOUSTON, Helen READE, Rita, Billie and Diane GILLESPIE and many nieces and nephews. In his prime, Glen was very active in sports, including hockey and baseball. He was also a great music lover and thoroughly enjoyed the Chatham Concert Band's summer concerts. At Centre Hospitalier Lachine on March 15, 2005 age 82 years. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she arrived in Canada in the early 60's. Margaret became the first woman to manage the parts department for Rolls Royce for the whole of Canada. She was also very active in her local community of Lachine where she resided. Margaret passed away a very proud Canadian. She leaves behind her brothers and sisters: Andrew, Mary PLENDERLEITH, David as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral from J.J. SPIERS, Ernest
Passed away at Grey Bruce Health Services, Owen Sound, Monday, November 14th, 2005. Ernest Leslie SPIERS of Markdale in his 87th year. Born in Windsor, Ontario, he was the son of the late Reginald and Maud (WADE) SPIERS. Predeceased by his wife Ella (BULMER.) Survived by six sons: Daniel, David, Ronald, John, Michael, and Robert; and their families, including fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and companion Inez PLESTER. He was a veteran of the second world war serving in Ontario's Essex Scottish Regiment as a bandsman. In 1952 he reenlisted in The Royal Canadian Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier H.M.C.S. Magnificent as bandmaster. He attended The Royal Marine School of Music in England and earned the degree of Licentiate of The Royal Academy of Music in military conducting. Returning to Canada he held various positions including bandmaster of Stadaconna band in Halifax and staff officer Royal Canadian Reserve bands based in Toronto. He retired from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1968 holding the rank of chief warrant officer. Upon retirement he completed a second career as instrumental music teacher in North York Junior High School, Toronto. He retired to the Markdale area in 1984 where he pursued his interests of hunting, fishing and especially gardening. He was a member of Virgin Lodge #3 Halifax, and Past Master of Hiram Lodge #490 Markdale Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons G.R.C. Friends may call at the May Funeral Home, Markdale, Thursday from 2: 00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., where Hiram Lodge #490 will officiate at a funeral service on Friday November 18th, 2005 at 7: 00 p.m. Cremation followed by broadcast at sea. Loving grandfather of Denis SIMONS (Leah), Calgary, Dan SIMONS, Calgary, Eden SIMONS, Fernie, British Columbia, Angie ALEXANDER, Niagara Falls, Sabrina BUCSKO, London, Andrei BUCSKO, London, Dylan STEELE, Sarnia, Clayton STEELE, Owen Sound and Paige STEELE, Corunna. Also survived by three step-granddaughters, Valerie ARTHUR- PLETZ, Parksville, British Columbia, Shelley ARTHUR, Comox, British Columbia and Melanie ARTHUR, Victoria, British Columbia and two step-great-granddaughters, Courtenay PLETZ and Madeleine PLETZ both of Parksville, British Columbia. Predeceased by parents William and Ada STEELE, brothers Wilfrid STEELE and Gordon STEELE and sisters Minnie ACKERMAN and Mary BROWN. Bruce was a radio officer with the British Merchant Marine in World War 2, and saw service in the convoys at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. He was a 35 year employee and, after his retirement in 1983, a proud annuitant of Imperial Oil in Sarnia. Bruce sang in the Central United Church Choir for 50 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Liberty Lodge # 419 Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Huron Lodge # 392 Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Wawanosh Chapter # 15 Royal Arch Masons, St. Simon Cyrene Preceptory # 37, and Mocha Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 176, Forest. Visitation at the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 431 Christina St. N. Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6: 30 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the McKenzie and Blundy Chapel 11 a.m. Friday followed by cremation. On Friday, March 18, 2005, Mrs. Margaret Dell KELLY of Edmonton, formerly of Niagara Falls, Ontario, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years. She will be lovingly remembered by daughters, Corrine (Jim) CHENG, Sherwood Park, Alberta and Paula (Gene) ARNOLD of Illinois, U.S.A. She will also be remembered by her grandchildren, Aaron (Tamara) CHENG, Calgary, Andrew CHENG, Sherwood Park, and Paula CHENG, Waterloo, Ontario; her two sisters, Marian CUMMINGS, Peterborough, Ontario and Shirley (Terry) KELLY, Toronto, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Patrick KELLY. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held at Morrison Street United Church on Monday, May 2, 2005 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at Victoria Residence, Chatham. She leaves her daughter Hélène (John GUZA) of Calgary; grandchildren Michele (John AUDIA) of Mississauga, Susan and Stephen of Calgary; great-grandchildren Catherine and Nadia AUDIA; and son Stanley MATKO. She is also survived by her sisters Anna CIKATRICIS of Ridgetown. Mary (Louis KNIZET) of Winnipeg, Cecile (Ed TOOLE) of Kelowna, and Petranella PLEVZA, brother Stanley (Joan) of Milk River, Alberta; and many nieces and nephews. Josephine was predeceased by her parents Stanley and Stephanie PLEVZA, and by her husband Steve (1980) and sister Frances KOROL (1996.) She was born in Zavar, Slovakia on June 10, 1920. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1938. Throughout her life, Josephine lived in Winnipeg, Hamilton and Ridgetown. Her family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caregivers, nurses and staff at Victoria Residence for their excellent care especially during her last days. Josephine will be remembered for her love of life, family and special outings to the mountains with her grandchildren in Alberta. Parish Prayers will be held at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 76 Main Street East, Ridgetown on Friday at 7: 00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ridgetown on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 11: 00 a.m. Interment will take place in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hamilton. Audrey was educated at Bishop Strachan School, Toronto Ontario, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Julian BENBOW, her son Michael LAURIE, daughters Sandra APPLETON, Deirdre LAURIE- BEAUMONT and Catherine Benbow PLEWES, and also by her eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by first husband, Dr. John LAURIE. Sister of Karlyn ALLARD.
