Blood trail in slaying
By Jim WILKES, Staff Reporter
A bloody trail along more than 100 metres of carpeting shows how a Mississauga man ran for his life after he was stabbed in the fourth-floor hallway of an apartment building Wednesday afternoon.
Peel police are hunting for the killer of Lamar PHILIP, 22.
Homicide Insp. Jennifer EVANS said the dead man didn't live in the nine-storey building next to the Erindale GO station at Rathburn and Creditview Rds.
A trail of blood runs the length of the hallway through two sections of the complex. Larger bloodstains outside some apartments suggest the victim may have sought help as he fled.
Police believe the killer might also have been injured and may be seeking medical help.
Yesterday, police were canvassing apartments and searching the GO parking lot and nearby fire station property.
Hundreds of commuters were delayed Wednesday as police looked for the killer among the crowd of GO passengers.

A true lover of people and music, a bon vivant with a talent for Friendship and humour, a devoted husband and father, Elmer possessed an ageless spirit and enduring energy that will stay with us forever. Elmer's life embraced the worlds of business, arts and academe in a unique way. He was a pioneer in management education in Canada through his many years at York University and the University of Toronto. A professor, a humanist, a singer and marathon runner, he touched many people across business, the arts and educational communities in Toronto and internationally with his strength to connect and communicate.
Predeceased by beloved wife Ruth BURTON and brother Ross PHILLIPS, he will be missed by his four children, David (Leslie BOWLAND,) Brock (Winnie HOBBS), Joan, Patricia (Neil FREEMAN), his grandchildren Katie and Betsy PHILLIPS, as well as sister-in-law Peggy OULLAHAN, brother-in-law Irwin OULLAHAN and family. Born in Toronto to Edgar and Minnie PHILLIPS, Elmer attended Malvern Collegiate, the University of Toronto (Victoria College 1943), and went on to do graduate work in industrial psychology. His true passion was singing and popular music and throughout high school and university, Elmer honed his talents as a vocalist with local dance bands and as a performer in musical theatre. A highlight of his life was his time as a cast member of the Royal Canadian Navy Show "Meet The Navy" touring Canada and Europe between 1943 and 1946. Following a brief period as a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation announcer after World War 2, Elmer began a career in personnel and human resource management with Household Finance, Great-West Life and Simpson Sears. He later focused on management education, joining the Extension Division of the University of Toronto. In 1964, Elmer moved to Geneva, Switzerland to work with the Management Development Branch of the International Labour Organization advising on productivity and management training in Asia and the Middle East. He later continued to work with the International Labour Organization on projects based in Sofia, Bulgaria. Elmer joined the Faculty of Administrative Studies at York University (now Schulich School of Business) in 1967, where he served as the Director of the Division of Executive Development until 1988. In 1994, he was honoured for outstanding contribution to the Faculty of Administrative Studies at York. Elmer was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts in Toronto and for many years found great enjoyment as an active member of the Arts and Letters Club, including a term as President. Elmer was also an Honourary Life Member of the Human Resource Professionals Association of Ontario and more recently a representative on the Senate of Victoria College, University of Toronto. His life was greatly enriched by time spent at Jack Lake where he loved to be with family and Friends.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks for the care given to Elmer during his illness, to Annette EBANKS and to the wonderful staff of K2 Centre at the Sunnybrook Veterans Residence. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5. Funeral to be held at the Chapel on Thursday, January 6 at 1: 00 p.m. A special celebration honouring Elmer's life will be organized for the spring with details to follow.
Elmer's credo was "Flowers for the living," and he expressed this compassionate philosophy by ensuring that accomplishments and efforts are given appreciation today, not tomorrow. In memory of Elmer, please recognize anyone in your life who brings help and joy to others. Donations to the Parkinson Society of Canada, 4211 Yonge Street, Toronto would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.

Grey HAMILTON
By Liz ETHERINGTON, Monday, May 30, 2005, Page A14
Journalist, corporate executive. Born December 20, 1929, in Toronto. Died February 18, of pulmonary fibrosis, in Aylmer, Quebec, aged Dad was born in 1929, the year the stock market crashed. An only child to Jane and Grey HAMILTON, he attended Rosedale Public School. A voracious reader and talented athlete, Dad went on to University of Toronto Schools; he graduated at 16. Although he continued his studies at Trinity College, University of Toronto, he hungered after a greater challenge -- to work.
Heading west, he settled in Vancouver where he began the first of many jobs in the newspaper world. Working for the Vancouver Sun, he honed his journalistic skills over the next few years. It wasn't long before The Ottawa Journal came knocking on his door, asking him to come to the nation's capital to cover the political scene. Later, The Globe and Mail enticed him back to Toronto.
In the weeks leading up to his death, he recounted two stories from this time that were quite remarkable. Being asked to cover a rather dry keynote speech on the topic of Shakespeare, Dad decided to write his review in iambic pentameter, true to the spirit of the bard. Although the editor initially refused to print the article, he eventually did so; the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Dad also remembered another time when he was covering the police beat. It was the time of the infamous Boyd Gang, Toronto's most notorious bank robbers. Everyone in the city was on high alert as they had just broken out of the Don Jail. They were eventually discovered hiding out in an old barn somewhere north of the city. As it turned out, Dad was the first journalist on the scene for the arrest.
Dad's reporter days in Toronto were cut short when he was asked to be the Special Assistant to Donald FLEMING/FLEMMING, then Minister of Finance. So began a career in the capital that would see him working alongside not only the leaders of the nation but also many world leaders.
He was a founding member and honorary lifetime member of the National Press Club. One-time reporter and former Privacy Commissioner Bruce PHILLIPS recalled collaborating with Grey HAMILTON to revive the struggling Ottawa Press Club. PHILLIPS had been elected club president on a pledge to move the club from its dismal situation at the top of a steep staircase in downtown Ottawa. Grey HAMILTON had the task of locating appropriate new quarters and supervising construction... and he found fabulous space in two storeys above a restaurant on Elgin Street. Voila! -- The National Press Club came into being with food and drink and a wonderful view of Confederation Square.
Dad was an original. When I was 16, he came back from Yukon having been up there on business. He had met Yukon Mike, a real character who was well beyond 100 years old. Dad thought it was a place where young people could learn a lot and he encouraged me to go. I went for three months and had the time of my life.
Dad's personal life was lived just as intensely as his professional life. He married twice in his lifetime. Both his wives, Joan and Jose, fell in love with the handsome and dashing figure that he cut. He was a supportive and loving friend to his two children Grey and Elizabeth, son-in-law Nigel, stepdaughter, Andrea, and grandchildren Diana, Peter, Claire and Michael.
Grey was an avid historian with a tremendous knowledge and interest in world affairs making him the consummate conversationalist. There wasn't a subject on which Grey didn't have an opinion and that he wasn't prepared to debate. He was also a person who loved beauty in all its forms, especially music. He loved to laugh and he loved to dance. Grey's intellectual strength and passionate nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Liz ETHERINGTON is Grey's daughter.

Lawrence "Larry" PHILLIPS
By Allan PHILLIPS; Len PHILLIPS; Joni GOLDLUST, Wednesday, August 24, 2005, Page A16
Boxer, woodworker, husband, father. Born October 26, 1913, in Montreal. Died May 3 in Toronto, of Alzheimer's disease, aged Our father never went to summer camp. He mentioned it a lot but never quite explained why he alone out of 10 brothers and sisters had not been offered the opportunity to go. Yet he accepted this with the equanimity that he showed throughout his life. When he complained, he laughed about it, and to this day the thing that people remember most about Larry was his constant smile.
Instead of camp, he hung out at the Y in Montreal and learned to box, becoming the Quebec champion in 1932. He was second in the Dominion of Canada championships the following year, but admitted to his younger brother that he gave up during the championship fight because he did not want to turn pro and lead a boxer's life. He had accomplished all he wanted to in boxing; had fought and beaten pretty well everyone who mattered in the welterweight division.
He also sang in a chorus at the Y and was an active participant in the stage productions. He taught his children and their spouses and all the grandchildren the nonsense lyrics from his stage career. And they loved to sing along with him, totally out of harmony. Larry grumbled about the cacophony, which encouraged the children to sing even worse, but to this day they all remember the lyrics. And to smile.
He learned woodworking at the Canadian Air Force base in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where he was physical fitness instructor to the airmen during the Second World War. His marvellous furniture and accessories are still in use.
In 1942, on an arranged date during a visit to Toronto, he met his wife-to-be Miriam. Their cultures were worlds apart. She was from a devout Orthodox Jewish family in a tight enclave in Toronto; he was from a mildly observant Jewish family in an integrated neighbourhood in French Montreal. Her family was from Russia, his from England. But Larry was easygoing and respectful when he met Miriam's father and so he took a liking to the young man, as most did, and gave him permission to marry his daughter. And before he could change his mind, they were married and moved to Sydney, N.S.
After the war Larry worked in Montreal in the clothing business as an independent sales representative. His affability led him to success, but when the opportunity came up to join in his wife's family's leather-clothing business with two of her brothers, they moved to Toronto, along with two young sons, Allan and Len. A daughter, Joni, was born soon after they arrived. The children grew up and married but all stayed in Toronto, to their parents' delight. Larry loved children and would always find time to spend with them. When we were young, he took us on endless fishing trips and kept our prize catches in the bathtub, to our mother's chagrin. And Friday nights he always brought us a special treat for dessert. He continued to share with 12 grandchildren his mischievous nature and his smile.
Late in life he took up soapstone carving and wood sculpture and made endless things that he always brought out to show whomever came to visit. The art was limited but his love for it was unlimited and you felt and shared in his joy.
In his 80s, he was stricken with cancer but survived and quickly resumed his physical activity, walking for miles every day, skipping rope and doing the calisthenics he had taught the airmen.
He fought the Alzheimer's that afflicted him as hard as he had fought anything in his life, but eventually he could not make it out for the final round and died peacefully in his sleep. With a smile.
Allan, Len and Joni are Larry's children.

DUNCAN, James Stuart, 1986 -- Died This Day
Thursday, December 22, 2005, Page S9
Businessman born in 1893
He started work for Massey-Harris in Berlin when he was 14 and his father was head of the company's European operations. In 1911, he moved to Canada and then joined the British army in the First World War. Afterward, he returned to the tractor company, where, in the Depression, he was credited with saving it from bankruptcy. In 1940, he was appointed acting deputy minister of defence for air and took over leadership of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. But he turned down an invitation to become a full minister, choosing instead to remain with his company. In 1956, he was fired by financiers E.P. TAILOR/TAYLOR and Colonel W. Eric PHILLIPS. His widely publicized departure -- he had only months earlier been named Canadian Businessman of the Year -- came as a bitter disappointment. In retirement, he wrote an account of his years at Massey.

3 dead, 5 hurt in deadly weekend
Series of incidents involving gunfire erupts across the city, including attack on couple
By Megan OGILVIE and Jordan HEATH- RAWLINGS, Staff Reporters
A weekend of gunfire and violence has left three people dead and five people being treated for their injuries in local hospitals.
The victims include a man in his 20s who was found shot dead yesterday in his apartment in the Kipling-Steeles Aves. area, a woman fatally shot Friday evening by a man who police say had "some relationship" with her, and a man who collapsed dead in a Davenport Rd. home Friday afternoon during a fight with another resident.
Other shootings yesterday and Friday also sent several victims to hospital.
The incidents include:
A shooting at about 5 p.m. yesterday at 2777 Kipling Ave. near Steeles Ave. W. Police say they arrived at the Etobicoke building and found a man in his 20s shot dead in a 13th-floor apartment. Two other victims were rushed to Sunnybrook hospital, where they are being treated for gunshot wounds.
A woman was shot dead and her husband injured by gunfire just before 6 p.m. Friday when they were attacked in an underground parking garage on Brookbanks Dr. in North York. Det.-Sgt. Gerry CASHMAN said police are hunting a suspect who had "some relationship" with the woman.
Border points and airports are on the lookout for the suspect, who police believe may be headed for Vancouver. John KOVACS, 52, is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. He was last seen fleeing the scene in a silver 1999 Honda with Ontario plate 149 WRX.
On Friday afternoon police arrived at a Davenport Rd. residence in the St. Clair Ave. W.-Lansdowne Ave. area to find 50-year-old Donald Andrew LATREMOUILLE with no vital signs. Investigators say the man collapsed on the kitchen floor during a fight with another resident. A cause of death has not been determined. Christopher Gordon PHILLIPS, 27, is in custody on a charge of manslaughter.
Also yesterday, police rushed to the Plaza Flamingo, on College St. near Bathurst Street, after gunfire erupted at about 1 a.m. Investigators say a man was shot in the back after a fight broke out on the dance floor, and a woman hit in the thigh. Police say the same bullet may have hit both victims, who are being treated for their injuries.
Officers are also investigating reports of gunfire yesterday in the Dupont and Dufferin Sts. area, although no victims had turned up.
Police are also continuing the hunt for a suspect after a student standing in a covered bus shelter near Monsignor Fraser College, in the Midland-Finch Aves. area, was hit in the arm by gunfire about 1 p.m. Friday.
Following last night's shooting on Kipling Ave., residents peered over balconies and shouted to onlookers assembled on the sidewalk as police scoured the area for suspects.
"I heard people crying close to apartment 1308, so I went to go and see," said Abdul ABOUD, 45, who was visiting a friend on the 16th floor when he heard about a commotion three floors down.
"About two or three people were crying and there were three police officers," he said. "One was taking notes and two others were standing by the open door."
A resident who identified himself only as Kirk W., 23, said he wasn't surprised by the shootings. "This does happen around here, especially in the ghetto," he said. "And this is the ghetto."
Blaine TIMMER, a 20-year resident of the building who was out for an evening walk with his dog, said he's had it. "It's time to move," he said. "It's gangs, hookers and drugs. This is a high-crime area, lots of young people with nothing better to do."
At last word, police had no suspects.
Investigators probing Friday's fatal shooting on Brookbanks Dr. were given a description of the suspect by the dead woman's husband, who was injured by the gunfire and is recovering in Sunnybrook hospital.
CASHMAN said the 35-year-old woman and her attacker had a history together. "My understanding is that it's a personal relationship," he said.
Police say they are unable to release her identity until they contact next-of-kin in Europe.
Investigators said they knew of at least one order barring the suspect from contacting the victim, but they wouldn't characterize the nature of the order.
CASHMAN called the killing "a cold-blooded ambush, just a cold-blooded attack.
"It appears that he was lying in wait for these individuals," CASHMAN said. "He came up unprovoked and shot them."

Shot man died shielding brothers
By Emily MATHIEU and Nicolaas VAN RIJN, Staff Reporters
A 22-year-old man shot dead in an Etobicoke apartment Saturday afternoon was killed defending his two young brothers, his grief-stricken mother said yesterday.
Toronto police say Orlando GRUNDY was killed after "a number of persons" entered his 13th-floor apartment at 2777 Kipling Ave. and began shooting at about 5 p.m. Saturday.
Residents in neighbouring apartments talked of hearing shotgun blasts coming from apartment 1308 where GRUNDY, of Jane Street, had gathered with his brothers and several other people.
GRUNDY's mother Sydney is in no doubt about her son's bravery.
"He dove in front of his brothers," she said yesterday as the family gathered to discuss what little they knew about Saturday's events. "He took the bullet for the other two."
The two younger boys, both injured in the gunfire, "were holding their brother in their arms" when police arrived on the chaotic scene, she said.
"His brother was laying in their arms, and they handcuffed them."
Two other men were injured in the attack, which GRUNDY's family said occurred when "people came in and started shooting at everything." They were taken to Sunnybrook hospital, where one victim remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his face, while the other is out of intensive care and expected to make a full recovery.
GRUNDY's mother said she was beginning to hear details from her two younger boys, who were later released from custody and gathered with family members yesterday.
"We all loved him," she said softly as she reflected on her dead son, whom she called a "soldier of love.
"He's my oldest son."
The gunmen fled the building and, despite a massive search by police and members of the Emergency Task Force, managed to elude capture.
Toronto police yesterday appealed for the public's assistance in tracking down the shooters responsible for Toronto's seventh homicide this year, but investigators have so far not released a description of the wanted men.
The GRUNDY family's grief capped a violent weekend in Toronto, one that also saw Szilvia VERES, 35, of Toronto killed in a Friday night shooting and 50-year-old Donald Andrew LATREMOUILLE die of unknown causes during an argument with roommate Christopher Gordon PHILLIPS at their Davenport Rd. residence Friday. PHILLIPS, 27, has been charged with manslaughter.
Saturday's violence included an early-morning shooting at the Flamingo Bar on College St. that left a man and a woman slightly injured.
A suspect in the Flamingo bar shooting turned himself in late Saturday.
Edwin VALASQUEZ, 20, turned himself in to 14 Division police around 9 p.m. Saturday; he faces numerous charges including attempted murder while using a firearm and two counts of aggravated assault. Faruth PORTOBANCO, 25, of Toronto was arrested earlier in the Flamingo incident.
Two off-duty paramedics, in the club when gunfire broke out at 2: 30 a.m. Saturday are being recommended for civilian citations after they tackled the gunman and disarmed him.
Gunfire continued to echo on Toronto streets just after noon yesterday, sending shoppers ducking for cover in the parking lot outside several stores in the Albion Rd. and Islington Ave. area of Rexdale.
Police said a man was sitting in his car in a plaza parking lot at 950 Albion Rd. when three suspects approached and "almost immediately opened fire with three guns."
Although a number of bullets hit his car, shattering the windows, the intended victim was able to flee without injury, Detective Debbie HARRIS said in a statement.
Police converged on the area and, with the assistance of heavily armed Emergency Task Force officers, arrested three suspects and recovered two handguns and a quantity of drugs.
Ali Nassir SHOWBEG, 23, faces charges including attempted murder and possession of cocaine for trafficking.
The other two suspects, Sean Conrad GRANT, 21, and Vanessa Charlene BAILEY, 19, are charged with possession of a restricted firearm and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
And police are continuing their search for the suspect in Friday's fatal shooting of VERES, who died instantly after a man opened fire as she and her husband, 46-year-old Kemenczy MIKLOS of Toronto, were in a parking lot at 15 Brookbanks Dr., in the York Mills Rd. and Don Valley Parkway area.
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for John KOVACS, 52, of Etobicoke, who was last seen fleeing in a 1999 silver Honda with Ontario plates 149 WRX. KOVACS faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
