Unregistered Cemeteries

Inactive and Unregistered Cemeteries

Bill 126, Inactive Cemeteries Protection Act, 2010, died due to the Legislature being prorogued on the 1st June. So, unfortunately, the impressive amount of work that done to promote the passage of this bill came to an end. Mr. Brownell, who introduced the Bill, did not run for office in the 2011 provincial election. We will have to see if we can find another champion in the legislature to work in our stead with the current government.

Read the OGS Position Paper on Cemeteries.

Unregistered Cemeteries

Below is a list of Ontario Counties/Districts. Clicking on one will enable you to see and download a PDF of all the known unregistered cemeteries in that County/District. If you see a cemetery that is of interest to you, will you please write to your MPP asking why it is not registered? You can tell your MPP that the OGS and the Ontario Historical Society have been trying to get these cemeteries registered, without success. Please send your letter to:

Unregistered Cemeteries by County/District

Note:

O Included in our lists are cemeteries which have been described as "moved". It is only in recent years that removal of all human remains from a burial site can be considered thorough and complete. Unmarked burials or unknown cemeteries are discovered quite regularly throughout Ontario.
* Denotes burial sites provided by the Ministry of Consumer Services, Consumer Protection Branch, Cemeteries Regulation Unit.
