Goals of the OGS Provincial Library

Our goal is to develop the collection into the primary resources collection for those doing genealogy in Ontario, wherever it may lead them, and for those researching ancestors from Ontario.

The Libraries first goal is to maintain a 'complete' collection of Family Histories of people who lived in Ontario. We accepted donated copies of family histories and offer to preserve and make them available to the Members of the Society and the residents of Ontario.

Foremost, the Ontario Genealogical Society's Library collection contains resources that are related to the culture and history of this province. The collection has related heritage topics such as the history of Ontario (local histories, religious denomination histories), the historical geography of Ontario, the documentary heritage of Ontario and other Ontario genealogical (Loyalists Lists, War of 1812 Militia Lists) resources. Because there is a Canadiana section to the North York Library, we have tried to not duplicate its resources.

The collection has indexes, transcriptions, and other compendia dealing with other parts of the world from which the people of Ontario have come. Titles include English, Scottish, Irish and Welch genealogical research andEastern European, Ukrainian, Jewish, Chinese, Italian, and Genealogical resources.

Other historically related materials deals with the Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Western Canada, and the eastern United States.

A special effort is being made to identify and subscribe to genealogically relevant periodicals.
