"Mc" surname Initial menu

Most of the original census, parish register, vital statistics, and newspaper birth/marriage/obituary souces we use in Genealogy are based on information spoken by one person and written down by another.
Surname variations like MacDONALD/McDONALD McCALDER/McALDER McCAULIFFE/McAULIFFE McFADEN/McPHADDEN McFEE/McPHEE come about when different spellings of the same name sound alike. The enumerator or clergyman or undertaker or newspaperman just marked down what he thought he heard.

In building OGSPI clickable surname lists we do three things that other websites and programs don't:
   1 MAC.. and Mac.. surnames show and sort as the corresponding Mc.. version
   2 MacC.. MACC.. McC.. MCC.. surnames show and sort with a single C.
   3 MacPH.. and McPH.. surnames show and sort as the corresponding McF.. version

This logic only applies to the surname lists and paragraph sorting headers.
Actual data paragraphs contain the names as typed like McCABE MacPHEE MACK MACKIE

The intent is not to destroy a sacred ancestral surname but to group the variations together and improve your chances of a quick match with the first click.
