Muskoka 1879 Atlas Draper Township lot 16 concession 6
This is a excerpt from Uncle Levi's (Fraser) Chapter on Uffington in his
book "The History of Muskoka"
"Mr. TOYE, native of England, one of the early settlers, was clerk of
the municipality. Along about 1887, in the spring time, one of
Muskoka's▼ worst tragedies occurred at Uffington when the
TOYE home was
destroyed by fire at night and all but one of the family of 6 perished
in the flames. It seems that the fire started from a smudge, it being
mosquito time. The family had retired about 9: 00 o'clock, all except
for a girl of l7 or 18 who was studying for a teacher. She remained up
to complete her homework. An hour or so later she discoverd that the
house was on fire and called her parents who were sleeping downstairs,
then ran to the nearest neighbours for help. But when help arrived
there was no sign of life and the house was a mass of flames. Mr.
TOYE
it appears, had started for the well with two pails but turned back
rushed into the house in an effort to save the municipal books and
perished on his hands and knees at the office door. Mrs
TOYE ran
upstairs to rescue the children. She succeeded in getting to the bed
where her two small children were asleep, she also was overcome at the
foot of the stairs and when her charred remains were found she had one
little child under each arm. A. grim symbol of pioneer motherhood, the
other child, a boy of about 13 perished in his bed. The tragedy cast a
gloom over the surrounding country."
Comments April 2002 by transcriber Carol Fraser:
"This story has always haunted me and I didn't even know who Mr.
TOYE or
Mrs. TOYE were and now with the 1881 Census they all have names for me.
There is no headstone in Uffington or anywhere else and so there will be
no record other than their death certificates should anyone go searching
for them so I think the date might be important to some family
member searching for them from England.."
