Additional information from Clarke researcher Ruth Waite on Jane:
We believe that Jane was the widow of Joseph
DAFOE at this point in time
but it was not noted by the enumerator I can make no connection as to why
she was with the
PURDY family. Jane
DAFOE married John
HAGGERTY 29 May 1864
both of whom were listed as widowed. Jane had a child by him but she left
John , went to Chicago area in 1876 with dtr. Margaret Ann
HAGGERTY. At
some point Jane returned to Clarke where she died December 27 1896 at the
home of her nephew Elias George
SMITH.
This entry for Jane in 1861 Clarke census is the only place that any of us,
including Sharon Haggerty of London Ontario, has been able to find.
She was very elusive. Sharon even searched American census records.
