Hard-hitting winger was first to add Rocket to Richard
By James CHRISTIE,
Page S8
With one perceptive comment, Ray
GETLIFFE coined one of the most
recognizable handles in the cultures of Quebec and Canada.
A left-winger for the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens during
the 1930s and 1940s who combined scoring ability with tough physical
play, Mr. GETLIFFE was at practice one day in 1942 when a breeze
was stirred in the Montreal Forum by a youngster streaking down
the ice, his eyes burning like anthracite coals under a shock
of black hair.
"I was sitting on the bench with Murph Chamberlain and Phil Watson,"
Mr. GETLIFFE recounted to the Hockey Hall of Fame's Stanley Cup
Journal. "Elmer Lach was on the ice with Maurice Richard and
fed him a lovely pass.
"Richard got the puck and took off. I leaned over to Murph and
said, 'Wow, Richard took off like a rocket!' "
A Montreal Gazette sports writer named Dink Carroll was nearby
and overheard the description. Within days, the identity Maurice
(Rocket) Richard was set in stone. The Rocket became an icon
in the game, in popular culture and
in Quebec nationalism.
Mr. GETLIFFE became a thumping journeyman. Physically imposing
in his day at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, the hard-hitting winger
crunched National Hockey League opponents into the boards on
the way to winning two Stanley Cup championships. Mr.
GETLIFFE
played a total of 10 seasons with the Bruins and Canadiens.
While the Rocket's scoring feats are a famous chapter in National
Hockey
League history, Mr.
GETLIFFE's sniping abilities were
respectable in their own right whenever he got the chance to
play with Mr. Lach, his favourite linemate.
On February 6, 1943, Mr.
GETLIFFE brought the Montreal Forum
fans out of their seats with delight when he scored five goals
against the arch-enemy Boston Bruins.
Montreal forward Hector (Toe) Blake had fallen ill and wasn't
at his usual post on the line with Mr. Lach and Mr. Richard.
Mr. GETLIFFE, usually on the second or third unit, got moved
up to the top scoring line by coach Dick Irvin Sr. He benefited
from Mr. Lach's nimble playmaking while the Boston defence was
paying close attention to Mr. Richard. He ended the night with
six points. That season was his most prolific in the National
Hockey League, with 28 goals and 53 points in just 44 games.
"He felt he could score 40 goals with a broom if he was playing
with Elmer Lach," his son, John
GETLIFFE, told The Canadian Press.
The next night, the teams renewed hostilities at the Boston Garden,
where fans had long memories and a grudge against a former Bruin
who was now wearing Montreal's colours.
"While they were waiting for the anthem, everybody had quieted
down and some leather lung in the top row yelled, 'GETLIFFE,
you can score five more tonight and you'll still be a bum,' "
Mr. GETLIFFE recalled.
A native of Galt, Ontario, he played from the 1935-36 season
until 1944-45, retiring at 31 after refusing a trade to the Detroit
Red Wings.
He had 136 goals and 250 points in 393 games and won a Stanley
Cup with the Bruins in 1939 and again as a Canadien in 1944.
After retiring from the National Hockey League, Mr.
GETLIFFE
refereed hockey and lacrosse and enjoyed a long, successful business
career. He also found time to hone his considerable golf skills
on the courses of Southwestern Ontario, even playing in the Canadian
Open as an amateur. He played the game into his 93rd year, even
as his eyesight faded.
In the National Hockey League lockout year of 2005, London, the
city that he called home, decided to celebrate its connection
to the Stanley Cup through Mr.
GETLIFFE.
The city perched the
illustrious senior on an antique fire truck along with the huge
silver cup for a ride of honour through town.
At 94, Mr.
GETLIFFE was the second-oldest living alumnus of the
National Hockey League, about four months the junior of ex-New
York Ranger and Chicago Blackhawk Clint Smith.
Ray GETLIFFE was born April 3, 1914, in Galt (now Cambridge,)
Ontario. He died June 15, 2008, in London, Ontario He was 94.
He is survived by Lorna, his wife of 74 years, son John
GETLIFFE
and daughter Lorna Rae
YURCHUK. He also leaves seven grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.
