TONGE, John Murray
59, Toronto, died peacefully, March 07, 2008, at Toronto General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born November 29, 1948 in Chengtu, China, he was a son of Walton Hibbert and Muriel (KITCHEN) TONGE who were serving as United Church missionaries in China. Murray graduated from the University of Western Ontario School of Law in 1973 and was admitted to the bar in 1975. He began his career with Canada Trust in 1975 as General Solicitor and advanced to Vice President Pension Trust, Regional Vice President Prairie Region in 1997 and to Vice President of Retail Projects in 1999. In retirement, Murray continued as a Consultant for TD Canada Trust, leading many key projects for the newly merged Bank until 2005. Upon completion of these assignments, he tackled his dream project which was to manage the construction of a beautiful family cottage on Lake Chandos in the Kawarthas. This project was successfully completed in 2007. Last summer, Murray was stricken with cancer and he attacked it with the same strength and determination to win that he had brought to all aspects of his life. He refused to let this illness get in the way of his many plans and he was sure that, with the help of the experts, he could gain the upper hand. Sadly, this is the one battle that was lost but his courage and strength will live on as an inspiration to all that shared this journey with him. Murray is survived by his loving wife, Pat, mother, Muriel, sons Graham (Y.L.) and Philip (Mariana), daughters Robyn (Diego), Pamela (Tony), Lindsay, brother David (Gail), sisters Leslie (Allan) FOSTER, Elizabeth (Josef) GOREK, grandchildren Amoren and Matthew, Aunt Gwen HEATHERINGTON (Ken) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Highland Funeral Home, 3280 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, 416-773-0933, where Murray's family will receive Friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2008. Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2008 in the Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Olav KITCHEN (Muriel's brother and Murray's uncle) will officiate. Reception to follow. Interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation, in Murray's memory, to The Canadian Cancer Society, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, or to the donor's favourite charity would be appreciated. Online condolences are available through www.highland-funeral.ca Grieve not for his death; Thank God for his life.
