SPICER loved history, humour
Elizabeth SPICER, a librarian for 38 years, organized the local
history collection.
By Jennifer
O'BRIEN, Sun Media, Mon., January 7, 2008
A local history guru, an independent woman known for wit and
determination, former London librarian Elizabeth
SPICER has died.
She was 91.
SPICER died Tuesday, days after a stroke. Her legacy survives
at the London public library, where for 38 years she helped anyone
find information on anything, and organized the library's extensive
local history collection.
To Friends who recall her "fantastic sense of humour,"
SPICER
will always be the independent librarian -- always "Miss," but
never "Ms" Betty
SPICER -- who was passionate about history and
architecture, a woman who took the bus where she needed to go.
Glen CURNOE, who became a librarian himself, recalls
SPICER was
the librarian who helped him to win a debate when he was a South
secondary school student in the 1950s.
Assigned to do a speech on whether television was beneficial
to teenagers, Curnoe said he went to the central library, where
SPICER was working as head of the general reference collection.
"I told her about my speech and she helped me collect all this
information on television," he said. "I won the debate at school."
He has other childhood memories of
SPICER.
"I do remember her threatening to kick us out if we didn't keep
quiet," he chuckled. "That was when libraries were supposed to
be quiet places."
Eventually, he would return to the library to work, where he
developed respect for
SPICER.
The two developed a Friendship
that forever connected them each May 22, the date of both their
birthdays.
In 1967, SPICER became head of the newly established London Room
at the library, remaining there for 14 years.
"She loved history. She was very loyal to her causes, local history
and genealogy," said
CURNOE, who followed
SPICER as the London
Room director.
In 1981, when she retired,
SPICER was made a life member of the
London and Middlesex Historical Society for contributions "beyond
the call of duty."
Even in retirement,
SPICER remained a stalwart on the city's
historical scene.
Another friend, Anne McKillop, yesterday remembered
SPICER as
a "tiny little woman with a fantastic sense of humour."
The two met in 1966 when together they helped form the London
branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. For years,
they worked together on committees to save historical sites.
"She always had this amazing ability to inject humour into things,
so we could get on with things.
"I can still see her, this little woman with heavy glasses. She'd
be reading a report or something and she would smile and make
a dry comment that would break everybody up."
SPICER's funeral is scheduled today at 2 p.m. at the Church of
Saint_John the Evangelist, 280 Saint_James St. in London.

But God knew he was hurting
And said, "It's time to go."
He suffered long without complaint
Oh yes, he paid his dues
He never once said "pity me"
Just smiled and saw it through.
His pain has stopped, the hurting done,
How we miss his dear sweet face.

He's in a better place.
