Dr.
Reverend
Agnes
GROOME was a woman of remarkable energy and
organizational skills. An accomplished educator and minister,
she was highly educated, earning seven degrees in seven decades
(B.A., B.Ed., B.Div., M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D., M.Div.). Involved in
life-long learning, she took her last course at the University
of Regina at the age of 88. Her teaching positions included Central
Collegiate (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan), Martin and Sheldon Williams
Collegiate (Regina, Saskatchewan), University of Regina, and
University of Toronto. Her church postings included mission fields
in rural Saskatchewan, Saint_James United Church (Regina), Grace
Church in Moose Jaw, St. Andrew's (Toronto), Silverthorne (Toronto),
and a short locum in Ft. Qu'appelle. A woman ahead of her time,
St. Andrew's College refused her ordination and her name was
struck from the roster of graduates because she had married and
was expecting her first child. Agnes always took a leadership
role in community organizations including the Young Women's Christian
Association, United Nations Association, University Women's Club,
Health Research Board, Saskatchewan Pension Committee, New Democratic
Party (candidate in Wascana), plus many church positions including
Sunday School Superintendent, Elder (first female in position
at Lakeview United Church). Agnes was honoured to have been appointed
by the government of Saskatchewan to the Cluff Lake Inquiry into
uranium development. As recent as two years ago, Agnes embarked
on a project to have stained glass windows honouring women in
the Bible installed in Lakeview United Church. As part of her
dedication to education in Saskatchewan, Agnes established several
scholarship funds at the University of Regina in the names of
her husband Les
GROOME, her brother-in-law Paul
GROOME, her parents
Sam and Isabelle, and plus made a generous donation to the University
of Regina establishing the Groome family fellowship in health
research. Agnes and Les were a remarkable team; through all their
studies, travels, and endeavours they loved and supported each
other. Agnes was a true matriarch in her family. She was the
driving force behind family projects; everyone was expected to
be onboard and involved. She could do anything and did -- wire
a home, build a stone fence, shingle a roof, install floors and
siding, build furniture, sew, even bake 12 pies at a time. Agnes
tackled everything with passion, including stamp collecting,
family tree research (four volumes), and land development. Foreign
travels were opportunities to study history and were fodder for
lectures. Widowed at 62, she then earned a new degree, and embarked
on a new career in a new city. Beloved by her grandchildren,
she encouraged them in all their varied interests. Later in life
she took great pleasure in building a new home (at age 80) and
planting 900 perennials on Pasqua Lake. She knew Canada well
as she moved many times: from Fleming to Brandon, Saskatoon,
Regina, Dunnville, Guelph, Clinton, Vancouver, Moose Jaw, Regina,
and Toronto. Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008,
2 p.m., at Wesley United Church, 3913 Hillsdale Street, Regina.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 6-7: 30 p.m. at
Speers Funeral Chapel 2136 College Avenue, Regina. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Sam and Bella Mills Scholarship,
University of Regina.

Eccentric teacher made school fun
By Ronnie SHUKER,
Special To
Sun
Media, Sun., April 6, 2008
When Peter
CONNON was schoolmarmin,' his varmints in Room 116
always knew when math class was over.
"Away ya went, ya happy varmints!" he would say.
CONNON was a teacher, "schoolmarmin' as he called it, at South
Huron District high school in Exeter from 1968-86.
"He was such an enjoyable… amiable character," said Joe
WOODEN,
a former South Huron principal. "He cultivated being a character,
and he was able to do that really, really well."
He died March 28 at age 84.
CONNON routinely turned the 1, 2, 3s and
A, B, Cs of arithmetic
and algebra into farm animals and fruit to make math more accessible
to struggling students.
His charming wit and unorthodox teaching style endeared him to
students like Jean
MASON, who took
CONNON's
Grade 12 math class
in 1970 and has worked at the high school since 1972.
"He saw and taught things differently," she said. "He definitely
walked to the beat of his own drum."
CONNON was as popular in the staff room as he was in the classroom.
After class, he could be found debating politics with his peers
while puffing on his Daily Mail hand-rolled cigarettes.
The eccentric teacher took an eclectic route to the classroom.
He worked as a real estate agent, stock broker and forester after
graduating with a B. Sc. in forestry from the University of Toronto
in 1949.
He also served with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm in Britain
during the late stages of the Second World War.
"He saw quite a bit of adventure and danger during his life,"
said his son, Hugh, 48, who works for the Ministry of Forest
and Range in British Columbia.
CONNON once had to scamper up a high stump to avoid being chased
by a bear while working as a forester on Vancouver Island in
the late 1940s.
He also had to guard a homicidal cook struck with bush fever
in a remote outpost in Northern Ontario with no radio in the
'50s.
CONNON left forestry for teaching, settling in Exeter and living
just two blocks from the school.
Although he left life among the trees, the forest never left
him. He remained an ardent conservationist and expert woodsman
his entire life. He enjoyed hunting and was a skilled angler.
CONNON defeated both colon and kidney cancer, and survived two
strokes.
He is survived by his wife, Maude, his children Patricia, Jane,
Hugh and Matthew, and five grandchildren.

HOFFMAN,
Lawrence
Mark
Larry died on January 28, 2008, after a valiant, nearly three-year
struggle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1944, he
was the beloved partner of Evelyn
SOMMERS, cherished father of
Toni, dear friend to Adam
REVESZ and Lauren
SHUSTER.
Predeceased
by his parents Sam and Mildred
HOFFMAN and brother Michael. A graduate
of Brooklyn College and the University of Toronto, his early
training in left-leaning politics took place at the knee of his
maternal grandmother who marched as a suffragette in New York
City. Reading was the passion he turned into a career that included
a vice presidency at Coles Books and the creation of his literary
agency, Authors' Marketing Services. Full of energy and always
outspoken, he loved travel, movies, bicycling, baseball, music
and dancing. He will be remembered for his witty and incisive
comments, keen intelligence and his direct, outgoing nature.
Friends are invited to an informal gathering in memory of Larry
at The Village Playhouse, 2190 E Bloor St. W., Toronto, on Saturday,
February 2nd from 1-4 p.m. Donations in Larry's memory can be
made to the Healing Journey at Princess Margaret Hospital, www.healingjourney.ca
