(August 29, 1929-March 15, 2008)
Passed away peacefully at home in Victoria, British Columbia
after a short fight with cancer. George is survived by his partner
of 35 years, Roslyn
GRAY/GREY, his five children, Tom (Penny,) David,
Jen (Nancy), Wayne and Chris, and their mother Diana. He also
leaves behind five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a
sister, Gwendolyn, and her family. George was born in Halifax
and went to school in Victoria. He completed an undergraduate
degree in biology at the University of British Columbia, undertook
his PhD in the University of Wisconsin and did postgraduate studies
at University of British Columbia. He then moved to Ottawa, where
he worked at the National Research Council and then Carleton
University. He was a professor of biology at Carleton for approximately
20 years, some of it as Department Head. He will be missed by
past colleagues and numerous students, who were inspired by his
passionate teaching style. He was an accomplished photographer,
enjoyed cycling and kayaking, and was a keen champion of the
environment since his childhood.
