McKAY, Ilse Elizabeth (née MEYER)
(August 6, 1922-June 16, 2008)
Beloved mother of Bruce McKAY, Victoria HOWLETT and Ian McKAY. Loved and loved by her son-in-law Robert HOWLETT and daughter-in-law Pam BAILE. Loving grandmother of Justin and Brittany HOWLETT and Simon BAMBIC- McKAY. A beautiful soul born in Bremen, Germany, she came to Canada at the age of 30 to what she claimed was a glorious country. Though she moved many times in Canada and lived many more years back in Europe, she loved Canada best of all. We were blessed to have had such a loving and caring mother who taught us to see the good in everyone, to love and care for the world we live in and to celebrate life, especially the small things. A huge thank you for the love and support of Doctor Karen LO who made me able to care for Mum at home where she passed peacefully. Many thanks to the Victorian Order of Nurses and Community Care Access Centre, especially nurses Trudie and Lenore and Personal Support Worker's Jasminka, Lynn and Ernestine for all the wonderful help. A large hug to Doctor D. VUJOVIC, Fiona and the Cancer Clinic. Special thank yous to Janet TAILOR/TAYLOR- JEFFS, Peggy and Bill RIVARD, Norah and John BENNETTO for all their loving care of Mum, me and my family through gifts of time, food, flowers and fresh farm eggs. Thank you to our dear Auntie Lill, who at 93 wrote many encouraging notes and letters to Mom. A blessing to all of Mom's neighbours and ours for the many kindnesses bestowed. You have all made these last 6 months bearable. As per Mom's request there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. We would love to invite all those who knew and loved her to an open house Thursday, June 19 from 6-9 p.m. at her home 714 Algoma Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, The Humane Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated and may be made through London Cremation Services (519) 672-0459 or online at www.londoncremation.com

Mom never got over daughter's murder
Misty HANEY 'lost everything when she lost her daughter.'
By Heather RIVERS, Sun Media, Tues., February 12, 2008
Woodstock -- The mother of an Oxford County girl murdered by the mom's former same-sex partner has died.
Misty HANEY, 29, "lost everything when she lost her daughter," her sister, Paige GILLIS, said.
HANEY died Saturday.
A jury in 2006 found HANEY's former partner, Melissa BABINEAU, guilty of second-degree murder and indignity to a body in the death of two-year-old Rebbecca HANEY.
BABINEAU was sentenced to life in prison.
The murder investigation began when Rebbecca's body was found December 24, 2003, in the basement of their Embro-area farmhouse where the HANEYs, BABINEAU and her three children had been living.
At trial, BABINEAU's role in relation to the toddler was described as parental.
GILLIS said her sister had a hard time recovering from the loss of her daughter.
"The monster that took my niece's life basically took my sister's that day," she said.
GILLIS said while her younger sister had had "some problems" earlier, Rebbecca's birth changed that.
"As soon as she was born, she grew up," she said. "Becca made her become who she was meant to be -- (it showed her) that she was meant to be more than she had been. It made her want to do more with her life."
HANEY and BABINEAU moved to the Embro farmhouse in early December 2003.
On the evening of December 23 Rebbecca was put to bed at 7: 30, but couldn't be found the next morning.
After several hours of searching, the toddler's body was found in a garbage bag inside a box in the cellar.
BABINEAU admitted to hiding the body, but denied causing the girl any harm.
Since her daughter's death, HANEY had trouble coping with her loss and kept to herself, GILLIS said.
"My sister was a good person," she said. "She was a good person with a good heart.
"To her, her daughter walked on water. She couldn't find her way back. I'm hoping she can find her peace now that she has her daughter back in her arms again."

Pictures of dead child help parents
By Kristine OWRAM, The Canadian Press, Mon., July 7, 2008
Toronto -- Gina STRIMAS- MacKEY was still celebrating the birth of her seventh child, Ezra, when she woke up one morning in May to find him lying motionless in his crib, not breathing.
One of her daughters performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on him until the paramedics arrived, but it was too late. Ezra was dead after only six weeks of life.
As the family made funeral preparations, a friend suggested that they might want to do something to memorialize their son. When she mentioned Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a charitable organization that specializes in photographing dead and dying infants, STRIMAS- MacKEY knew she had found the perfect way to remember Ezra.
STRIMAS- MacKEY contacted Heather RIVLIN, a Toronto photographer who is with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep and she agreed to take photos at Ezra's funeral.
The photographs from that day tell a story of grief, but also of a close-knit family supporting each other in a difficult time.
In one photo, STRIMAS- MacKEY holds Ezra, the tears visible on her face as her husband comforts her.
"I thought (these photos) would be a tangible tool to help the younger children understand and comprehend what had happened. What I've come to realize is it's a tool to help me, because it doesn't let you forget," said STRIMAS- MacKEY.
"I don't want to forget how we felt at that moment, because if we do that it will minimize how much Ezra means to us," she added, her voice breaking with emotion.
STRIMAS- MacKEY isn't alone in her desire to remember a very difficult part of her life, said Sandy Puc, a Colorado-based photographer and co-founder of Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.
Puc already specialized in photographing terminally ill babies when she was asked by a client if she could wait until her baby was taken off life support to photograph him "without all the tubes and the wires."
Puc said she was "bowled over" by the request, and found it very difficult, but also very fulfilling.
The end result of that photo session inspired Puc and the mother, Cheryl Haggard, to create Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.
Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep was founded in 2005 and already has more than 5,000 photographers volunteering in 20 different countries.
