RALPH, George Wingate (1920-2008)
Passed away quietly on January 18, 2008, at North York General Hospital, less than one month prior to his 88th birthday, following a courageous battle with a lingering illness. Beloved husband of Edna Evelyn RALPH (née HENRY) for 65 wonderful years. Loving father of Andrea Ashley HERRNSDORF and Warren George RALPH, father-in-law of Catherine RALPH (née SHACK,) and adored grandfather of Erika HERRNSDORF and partner Rob DOWDLE. Uncle to valued nieces and nephews in California and Toronto. Born in Toronto, February 14, 1920, the youngest son of the late Benjamin RALPH of London, England, and Annie Wingate RALPH of Edinburgh, Scotland, and brother to the late Jack RALPH of Los Angeles and Harry RALPH of Toronto. A proud Canadian, he was also proud of his family history and background. He spoke often of his family connection to the late Major-General Orde WINGATE. Retired Executive Vice President and Director, A.C. Nielsen Co. of Canada, where he was a pioneer in the television and broadcast rating business. Past President, Broadcast Executives Society; Past Director, Saint Bernard's Convalescent Hospital. Initiated into Freemasonry 64 years ago, and an Honorary Life Member of Zetland Wilson Lodge Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons No. 86, Toronto. Fifty year member of the Scottish Rite (Toronto Lodge of Perfection and Toronto Sovereign Chapter Rose Croix), Moore Sovereign Consistory, Hamilton, and Rameses Shriners, Toronto, where he was an Honorary Member of the Founders Unit. Forty-eight year member of Royal Order of Jesters, Toronto Court 83; Past President, Desert Jesters Charter Member, Liftlock Billiken Club; Life Member, Kachina Klub; and Member, Fraternal Order of SOBIB. Commissioned as a Member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. As a youth, he was a championship swimmer, and was proud of the Royal Life Saving Society award he received at the age of 16 in 1936. A keen golfer, he enjoyed the many happy years he was able to spend hitting the fairways in his beloved Palm Springs, California. He volunteered for many years as a marshal at the Bob Hope Desert Classic Golf Tournament. He was proud to be elected as a fifty year Honorary Member of the Lambton Golf and Country Club, Toronto. The Ralph family wishes to express it's heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Doctor Irwin KELTZ; Doctor Richard GLADSTONE; Doctor Andrew BRAUDE; personal caregiver and family friend Narda TAMAYO; Rohit TAMHANE and caregivers Marilyn BALATERO and Maribeth ALMERON of Arcadia Senior Care; pharmacist Henry LEE; and the magnificent and caring doctors and nursing staff of the North York General Hospital, including the many compassionate and professional staff in Emergency, 4 North, and Intensive Care Unit/Critical Care Unit, 6 South. Our grateful thanks are also extended to the Rev. Canon Bill Rainey. Cremation and interment, York Cemetery. A private family Memorial Service will be held at Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. HESS, Alix Martha (née RALPH)
Of London, Ontario, Gilbert, Arizona and formerly of Wallaceburg, Ontario, passed away suddenly in Arizona on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 in her 67th year. Alix is the daughter of the late William Allan and Jeanne Marie (JOLIAT) RALPH. Beloved wife of Paul Joseph HESS. Loving mother of Charlie and Melissa HESS of Gilbert, Arizona. Dear grandmother of Marina and Jiada. Sister of Allan RALPH and wife Michelle SAINT_JOHN. Alix had retired as the Human Resources Director of St. Clair Technologies, was a patron of the arts and member of Wallaceburg Little Theatre. Friends may call at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home 409 Nelson Street (at Elgin) in Wallaceburg from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 1 at 1: 30 p.m. Cremation will follow. At Bluewater Health Mitton Street Site on 15 May 2008, James JOHNSON age 83 of Sarnia. Husband of the late June Barbara (HALL) JOHNSON. Father of Christopher, Valerie and Brett JOHNSON. Grandfather of Jessica and Ian McDOWELL, Tyler MacKENZIE and Ashley JOHNSON. Great-grandfather of Alison and Emily McCULLY, Kayla McDOWELL and William JOHNSON- RALPHS. Jim served as a Bomb Aimer in World War 2 with 426 Squadron. Later he returned to school at University of Toronto, he graduated in 1951 with a B.A.Sc., Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation Jim joined Dow Chemical. He retired in 1982. At Jim's request there will be no visitation or service. Cremation is to take place and the ashes will be interred at Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. At her residence on Sunday, March 9, 2008. Donalda Mae RALSTON (née MacPHEE) of Canterbury Street, Woodstock in her 105th year. Beloved wife of the late Rev. James Oates RALSTON (1949.) Dear aunt of Samuel MacPHEE and his wife Sandra of Nova Scotia, Jeanne MacMILLAN of New Brunswick, Caroll ESTEY and her husband Bob of Connecticut, Heather ENGLISH and her husband David and JoAnne DEMERCHANT and her husband Garnet, both of New Brunswick. Loved great aunt of Stephen ROBERTSON of England and Andrew ROBERTSON of Guelph. Also survived by several great-grand nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her step-son Keith RALSTON, step-daughters Helen and Doris RALSTON, siblings, Muriel DICKSON/DIXON, Mary MacPHEE, John MacPHEE and Donald MacPHEE. Donalda graduated from Queens University and taught at W.C.I. for several years. She was also a longtime member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Woodstock. Friends may call at the Longworth Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock (519-539-0004) on Friday after 12: 00 p.m. where the complete service will be held in the chapel at 1: 00 p.m. with Rev.
