RAFTIS,
Rev.
James
Ambrose, C.S.B.
Died peacefully in his sleep at Saint Michael's Hospital after
a brief illness. Father
RAFTIS was born August 24, 1922 in Arthur,
Ontario one of five sons of James Stephen
RAFTIS and Blanche
(DINNEEN)
RAFTIS.
After graduating from Arthur High School, Ambrose
was accepted into St. Basil's Novitiate and made his religious
profession in 1941. As a seminarian, Ambrose was directed toward
the social sciences and history. Though somewhat removed from
the usual Basilian institutional academic programs, this area
proved to be congenial to his abilities. He finished at the top
of the honour course in political science and economics at the
University of Toronto and the following year earned and M.A.
in economics. Ambrose
RAFTIS was ordained to the priesthood June 29,
1948. From 1949-1954 rather than accepting a scholarship from
Harvard University, he pursued a doctoral course in the new program
initiated at Laval University that attempted to wed traditional
philosophical and theological studies to the social sciences.
He then acquired a doctorate in medieval history from Cambridge
University. Father
RAFTIS became dedicated to medieval social
history and the training of a number of professors who became
prominent in leading Catholic and non-Catholic Universities.
A dozen books, scores of lectures and learned papers complemented
this teaching. Recognition was given to his accomplishments by
election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Member
of the American Historical Association. Administrative obligations
inevitably followed too as Father
RAFTIS was elevated to the
post of president of the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies,
1979-1988. Ambrose retired from teaching in 1990 and continued
to reside at Saint Michael's College, Toronto. For health reasons
he moved to the Cardinal Flahiff Centre, Anglin House, Toronto
in 2006. Father
RAFTIS is predeceased by his parents and brothers
Leo, Francis, John and Eddie. To his sisters-in-law Adele, Jean
and Olivene and his nieces, nephews and Friends the Basilian
Fathers offer their condolences and prayers. Friends may call
at the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre Chapel, 95 Saint_Joseph
Street, Toronto on Thursday, April 22 from 2: 00-5:00 p.m. with
a Vigil Service at 7: 30 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be
celebrated in the chapel on Wednesday, April 23 at 10 a.m. Interment
in the Basilian plot at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, Ontario.
