NOLAN,

Mary▲ (née
POTVIN)
Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, volunteer, woman
of faith. Born November 6, 1915, in Manotick Station, Ontario
Died December 27, 2007, in Mississauga of cardiac arrest following
pneumonia, aged 92.
By Rita Mary
NOLAN,
Page

Irene Mary
NOLAN didn't know her middle name was Mary until she
was in her 50s.
She thought it was Laurencia, a name she vehemently disliked.
But in 1969, her birth certificate revealed a surprise: Apparently,
the elderly priest who had baptized her had secretly deviated
from Laurencia when registering her birth. Irene figured he had
deemed it inappropriate for a Roman Catholic to bear two pagan
names.
When
Irene was 8, her parents, Louis and Alma
POTVIN, moved with
their five children from the farm in Manotick Station to Bowesville,
Ontario Irene completed eight grades in five years, then attended
Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa.
Her desire to train as a nurse diminished when Jack
NOLAN, a
young man from a neighbouring farm, captured her heart. Irene
and Jack married on June 12, 1937, and moved to a farm where
Irene hauled water, chopped wood and cooked on a woodstove. She
also seized axe, rock or stick to annihilate any marauding reptile
or rodent that had the ill fortune to cross her path.
With prospects uncertain, Jack got a job at Inco in 1948. Irene
and their two young sons, John and Dan, soon joined him in Sudbury.
Two more children, Tim and Rita, were born later.
Irene was a devout Roman Catholic who prayed her rosary daily
for more than 60 years. Her volunteerism benefited the hospital,
church and charities.
With limited resources, she cooked, cleaned and created a home.
Every day, just after 4 p.m., her fragrant baking would attract
family and Friends to her kitchen.
She basked in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. Her deep love for Jack proved an unbreakable
bond, even through 15 years of widowhood.
Following Jack's death, she moved to Mississauga to live with
Rita, embarking on new adventures. A highlight was dogsledding
in Alaska at 90.
In her lifetime, Irene had escaped from a burning car; survived
complications after childbirth, despite the declaration of nurses
that she would not last the night; got up with help after tumbling
down a flight of stairs in her mid-80s and fracturing her pelvis
and ribs; and survived a pulmonary embolism in her 90s.
Last year, with her health declining, she moved to a nursing
home. Her serenity was never more in evidence than in those days
before Christmas leading up to her death. Irene herself quietly
wondered why she was still alive. Her heart stopped beating just
before midnight on Boxing Day. The lyric "Sleep in heavenly peace"
forever took on new meaning.
Rita Mary NOLAN is Irene's daughter.

DANYLKIW,
Mary
Ann (née
NOLAN)
Suddenly in Oakville, on July 1, 2008, after a fall in her 82nd
year.
Mary was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Mike,
and two of her sons, Christopher and Michael and all of her brothers
and sisters, May, Patricia, Paddy and John
NOLAN and Nora
GRIFFIN.
She is dearly missed by her sons John (Brenda) and Brian
DANYLKIW,
her daughter Anne-Marie
WILSON and her grandchildren: Victoria,
Michelle, Lauren, Katherine, Caitlin and Esme. She is survived
as well by her many nieces and nephews.
Mary grew up in Outremont, Quebec, the last child of Philip and
Mary Teresa
NOLAN, and moved to St. Laurent with her husband.
Their incredible journey of love together took them around the
world, but they lived in Rosemere, Quebec, Toronto and then Brampton,
Ontario after which they retired to the Saanich peninsula on
Vancouver Island in British Columbia where they were both devoted
to their Friends and neighbours and deeply involved with the
parish of St. Elizabeth's Church in Sidney. When Mike passed
away in 2003, Mary's health became more fragile and she eventually
joined the Sunrise community in Victoria, British Columbia and
later came to the Sunrise residence in Oakville in October 2006.
While Mary's health continued a slow decline, she was still very
active in the Sunrise community, making many Friends and keeping
everyone on their toes. Mary will be missed by all.
The family wants to thank the many dedicated, compassionate caregivers
and staff at Sunrise, all of whom worked as a team to provide
Mom with the closest thing to home, particularly Alma, Sara,
Sabah, Henrietta, Makeba and Vanda, who went above and beyond
to make Mom's last two years as comfortable and as energizing
as possible. As well, the family also wishes to express their
deepest thanks to Doctor Helen Pyle for her constant care, assistance
and patience.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18th at 11: 00 a.m.
at Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 181 Sewell Drive (905-844-7971)
in Oakville. Memories can be shared at amjwilson@sympatico.ca
and bdanylkiw@rogers.com. Donations to the Canadian Heart and
Stroke Foundation would be gratefully accepted. A private family
interment will take place later this summer.

NOLAND--In
Memory of our dear husband, father, son, brother and friend
Allan NOLAND who passed away February 28, 2004.
Our lives go on without you
But nothing is the same,
We have to hide our heartaches
When someone speaks your name.
Sad are the hearts that love you
Silent the tears that fall,
Living our hearts without you
Is the hardest part of all.
You did so many things for us
Your heart was kind and true,
And when we needed someone
We could always count on you.
The special years will not return
When we were all together,
But with the love within our hearts
You will walk with us forever.
Missing you always and forever.
Love, Nancy, Christopher, Kara and Jason Lorna, Leslie, Valerie, Keith,
Mark and Evan and many other family and Friends.
