BERSUDSKY,
Joanne (formerly
BUCKERFIELD, née
FALLIS)
Sunday February 17th, 2008. Tired and worn out, her body gave
peace to her soul, gracefully and peacefully.
An actress of skill and talent, a lady of letters, writer of
poetry and prose, a skilled and discerning editor, a lady of
character, warmth and caring.
Creative, insightful, instinctive, intuitive, a lady of courage
and determination, with a low tolerance for foolishness and its
perpetrators.
Loving widow to her late husband Sidney
BERSUDSKY, good friend
of her late first husband E.H.
BUCKERFIELD, dear and caring mother
to her son James
BUCKERFIELD and his wife
Geertje
MOELIJKER of
Crans, Switzerland, a caring "second mother" to Neil, Helen and
Lynn BUCKERFIELD. A friend to many, a mentor to some fortunate
few, an example to all, she was liked and respected.
She is missed already, and will be missed for a long time to
come.
A memorial celebration will be held on Thursday February 28th,
at the Heliconian Club Hall at 35 Hazelton Ave, from 5 p.m. onwards,
and all of her Friends are invited to come along and join us.
No flowers please, but a contribution to your preferred charity,
or to the Heliconian Club Foundation.

MOENS,
Hendrik
Pieter
Bernelot
Peter MOENS for short, was born in 1931 in Sukabumi, Indonesia
from Dutch parents, and died on April 28, 2008 at the age of
76, in Toronto. Peter spent his first 14 years in Indonesia and
then was repatriated to the Netherlands with his family, shortly
after the end of the Second World War.
In 1953, he and his new wife Marja emigrated from the Netherlands
to New York City, where he worked as a physiotherapist at the
Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1956 he moved to Canada, becoming a
Canadian citizen in 1961. In Toronto, Peter resumed his education
and initially studied forestry, but became interested in research
and eventually graduated in 1963 with a PhD in Biological Sciences
from the University of Toronto. Peter became a founding member
of the York University Biology Department in 1963, where he researched
and taught with passion and dedication until the final days of
his life.
During his career at York, Peter became an internationally respected
leader in the field of reproductive cell biology. His research
and teaching was strongly influenced by his understanding of
evolutionary theory and scientific method. Peter was elected
a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1978, became a Distinguished
Research Professor at York University in 1981, and served as
the Scientific Editor of the Canadian genetics journal Genome
for the last 25 years. Peter was an avid tennis player, sailor,
and triathlete, not only participating in these pursuits but
recruiting his children, students and Friends to them as well.
He was also a flutist, a maker of jewelry and furniture, and
a great lover of natural beauty. He will be remembered for his
energy and his enthusiasm for life. Peter's loss is keenly felt
by his wife Marja and his children Richard (Eileen) of Toronto,
Ted (Nancy
HAMILTON) of Vancouver, British Columbia, Vivian
MOENS
(Matthew O'GORMAN) of Toronto, Cecilia
MOENS
(Garry

of Seattle, Washington, and Francis (Melissa) of Toronto, and

by many wonderful Friends and colleagues. Visitors are welcome
at Peter's home, 217 Northwood Drive, North York, on Thursday
May 1 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A memorial gathering will be
held on Friday May 2, from 7-10 p.m. in the 3rd-Floor Lounge
of the Lumbers Building, York University, 4700 Keele Street.
Donations to the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre (Sunnybrook
Foundation) will be gratefully accepted.
