LECHTZIER,
Dorothy
Beatrice (née
HEARD)
Born
November 29, 1927 to Albert and Kathleen
HEARD, "
Bette"
grew up in Vancouver living the epitome of west coast life. She
attended Lord Kitchener Elementary, Lord Byng High and then University
of British Columbia where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority
and earned a B.A. (English).
Bette met Merton
(LECHTZIER) at a Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club
dance and, after converting to Judaism, married him on August
12, 1953 at Beth Israel Synagogue. The Tennis Club became a central
part of their lives both for sport and Friends and they were
active members there for over five decades. Mert and "Beebz"
(as she was affectionately known) moved to Shaughnessy in 1955 and
remained there for the next 40 years. They loved to travel and
spent many wonderful holidays with Friends in exotic destinations.
They were also great entertainers and hosts, and their home became
the venue of all manner of parties over the decades.
Though Bette was part of the Doctor Spock generation, she was also
a mother in the mould of Donna Reed. She was the purveyor of
the most wonderful comfort food (as we now know it) and had an
encyclopedic knowledge of how to make secondary meals out of
an original source reflecting the thrift of her leaner years.
She was also a resourceful epicurean, leaping at every opportunity
to retrieve fresh delicacies from the country, blackberries from
the lane or dandelion leaves from the shoulder of the highway.
Like Mert, Bette loved fashion but above that style. Her nose
for a good sale was legendary and she had a wonderful ability
to mix a modest wardrobe into something very chic. Bette was
also strongly independent and, as her motherly responsibilities
began to wane, pursued many projects on her own. To no one's
surprise greater than her husband, Bette became both a shrewd
investor and successful B&B proprietor.
Above all else, Bette was great fun; a hybrid personality of
(I Love) Lucy, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore and Marty Feldman.
She was a wonderful friend and neighbour and the source of wild
and wonderful antics and stories. Bette had an infectious laughter
which could permeate a room in an instant. She was a great dancer
(and loud singer), a wonderful raconteur, would mimic any person
at the drop of a hat, and a boundless source of old English rhymes.
She loved dark chocolate covered anything, liked to poke you
in the ribs after a minimal of prodding, and thought Michael
Caine, Gene Hackman and Gene Wilder were drop dead gorgeous (all
of them strangely having coifs like her husband). She was always
cold (especially the tip of her nose), could stick her tongue
out in more directions than most reptiles, and was a little tornado
of activity in the garden.
In the late 1990s, dementia took hold of Bette's personality,
twisted it and slowly robbed us of her unique laughter and charm.
However, even through this difficult period, Bette still managed
on occasion to emit a little twinkle from her eye and a merry
laugh to brighten a room. During often desperate years, Mert
was a loyal and loving companion and caregiver of unlimited capacity
who made any sacrifice for his beloved wife. Bette escaped her
torment and let go of life on April 10th at the age of 80 in
Vancouver. She has been, and will continue to be, sorely missed
by many and is irreplaceable.
Bette was predeceased by her beloved husband Merton in December 2006 and
is survived by her sister Sally
MIDWINTER
(James) of Ottawa
her three children, Matthew of London (England), Paul (Jennifer
DOLMAN) of Toronto, and Sally
RUTLEDGE
(Jeffrey) of Vancouver,
as well as six grandchildren; Sam, Adam and Emma
RUTLEDGE, and
Harris, Sasha, and Abby
LECHTZIER.
The family thanks Helen Combs for her loving care and devotion
to both our parents over five difficult years. Donations to the
Pacific Alzheimer's Research Foundation at www.parf.ca or 604-678-8138
are gratefully appreciated.
