LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY chose his own route on Great Escape
By Kate DALEY,
Special To
Sun
Media, Sun., March 16, 2008
He wasn't one of the tunnel diggers, but he may have been one
of the men who secreted the dirt out in their pant legs.
No stranger to hard work, Russel William
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY spent 35 years
in the building supply business in London.
But he also had a claim to fame tied to other hard -- and deadly
dangerous -- work: The Great Escape by Allied prisoners of war
from a German camp during the Second World War.
Joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941,
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY saw action
with 419 squadron.
Returning from a bombing run over Germany, his plane was shot
down. He survived, but the enemy captured him.
He was taken to a prisoner of war camp for air officers, Stalag
Luft III, from which the famous escape tunnels to the outside
code-named Tom, Dick and Harry -- were dug.
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY spent two years at the camp, its breakout popularized by
the movie The Great Escape, with Steve McQueen.
"He was one of the lucky ones that never did escape," Gregg
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY
of London said of his father.
After digging extensive tunnels under the camp, using everything
from milk cans to bed boards, a large group of prisoners tried
a mass escape.
Fifty men were captured and killed by the Germans and the rest
turned back, said Gregg, adding it was lucky his father never
made a run for it.
When the advancing Russians invaded, the Germans closed the camp
and marched the men toward Berlin.
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was finally liberated
in 1945.
"He did what he had to do," said his son.
"Once he decided on doing something, he never regretted it. He
lived his life with an incredible amount of integrity."
When
The
Great Escape premiered,
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and some of the other
prisoners of war were invited to view the movie in Toronto.
He told his son the film was a bit embellished, but he recognized
some characters' names.
Born in Hamilton in 1913,
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY returned to the area after the
war and married Marion
CAMPBELL in 1946. Their son was born in
late 1947 and a daughter, Jane, in 1950.
The family later moved to London where
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY worked for Woollatt
Lumber, a company he eventually bought.
Retiring 32 years ago, he was an active golfer and curler until
the last years of his life. He wintered in Florida and moved
to Dundas 15 years ago.
"He was respected both in business and as a member of the Highland
Country Club and Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club," said his
son.
"I never heard anybody say a bad word about him."
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY died at his home last Tuesday. He was 94. Besides his two
children, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marion, and
one grand_son.
Every night at 5 o'clock
LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY would sit down with a rye and
soda. He was known to poke fun at the doctors who nagged him
about that habit.
"He lived as long as he did because he had his own medicine,"
his son said with a laugh.
