KISBY,
Russ
Fitness guru, husband, father, grandpa, mentor, friend. Born
March 22, 1940, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Died July 20, 2007,
in Mississauga, Ontario, of mesothelioma, aged 67.
By Sally ARMSTRONG,
Page L8
There are rumours that Russ
KISBY - the fitness prophet who begged,
cajoled and teased Canadians to get off their couches during
his 30-year reign at ParticipAction - is leading a celestial
exercise class.
Russ was one of the founders of ParticipAction, and its president
for most of its existence.
His hugely successful formula for fitness was based on fun and
a clever collection of advertisements and activities.
His antics for getting Canadians to "walk a block" became the
stuff of legends. As director of athletics at the Montreal Young
Men's Christian Association in the 1960s, he started a noon-hour
fitness class for business executives, unheard of for the two-martini-lunch
crowd.
When I was a rookie physical education teacher, Russ called and
suggested I pinch-hit at one of his lunchtime classes. No is
never an option when replying to one of his requests.
"Would you mind wearing a costume?" he asked with the ever-present
grin previewing mischief ahead. Clad in a skimpy Santa's elf
costume, I rolled into the gym on a mat trolley with six of his
fitness assistants also dressed in Santa gear.
Humour was Russ's trump card on and off the job. He was the dad
who was always available for shenanigans such as the Cottage
Olympics, which featured water hurdles and watermelon-seed spitting.
His Halloween haunted house attracted every kid in the neighbourhood.
Russ hardly ever missed his son Tait's football games at Bishop's
University, even though it meant a weekend trip from Mississauga,
Ontario, to Lennoxville, Quebec And when his daughter, Marlis,
set out on a bus tour of Europe, he accompanied her to London
to make sure the trip got off to a good start - in a London pub.
Adventure was like a mantra to Russ. On a hiking trip in Banff
with Tait, then 11, he explained that taking the gondola to the
top of Sulphur Mountain and eating in a fancy restaurant with
tourists was no way to enjoy the outdoors. They climbed the mountain
and picnicked at the summit, until a herd of hungry mountain
goats surrounded them.
At his funeral the congregation sang This Land is Your Land as
a tribute to the health fix Russ had given Canada. And then,
as if he was still standing in front of the old gym at Montreal's
Young Men's Christian Association urging people on, a ParticipAction
colleague led the crowd in arm circles, stretches and body twists.
His wife Merle, children and grandchildren, Wes and Molly, joined
in. Like everything else Russ did in his life, the workout left
everyone smiling in memory of the man who served Canada and brought
so much joy to his family and Friends.
Sally ARMSTRONG is Russ's friend.

the rest of his working years cultivating his love for plants.
John and his wife Helena settled on a farm in the Mount Brydges
