BUCHANAN,
David
William, Q.C.
(January 14, 1942-May 18, 2008)
(Vancouver) David was born in Bristol, England. His earliest
school years took place in Scotland, England and Wales, with
one year in Lebanon and part of a year with a tutor in Syria.
The majority of his primary education was at Hurst Grange Boys
Boarding School, Sterling, Scotland. During these formative years,
he spent holidays, in places such as Nigeria, visiting with his
parents who were stationed internationally, working on various
engineering projects. When David was 12, he immigrated with his
parents, to Canada whereupon he attended Upper Canada College
and later The University of British Columbia, obtaining his Bachelor
of Commerce and Bachelor of Law in 1966. David articled at the
prestigious law firm of Clark Wilson LLP in Vancouver, where
he became a partner, enjoying a successful career in the litigation
department, practicing employment law, gaming law, family law,
and intellectual property. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in
1983. As well, David took pride in providing leadership in training
and mentoring in his field. His practice lasted for 42 years,
until days before he passed. As a volunteer, David served on
the Board of Trustees of Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences
Centre for 13 years, acting as Chairman for one year. He was
a former President of The Vancouver Bar Association; a former
director of the Legal Services Society of British Columbia; former
Chair, Law Day of British Columbia; former member, National Judiciary
Committee, Canadian Bar Association and a member of the International
Commission of Jurists. From his university days, he remained
a member of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity and the Annual Gardy Frost
Steelhead Fishing Group. He was also a member of the University
Club and subsequently, The Vancouver Club. If law was his life-long
profession, then fishing was his passion. David's pursuit of
trout, salmon, dorado, marlin, sailfish, and bonefish took him
throughout Canada, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Hawaii. Two
special hobbies David enjoyed were reading and philately, which
brought him quiet times and fulfilled his vast interest in history.
David was part of a very close and loving family, he was predeceased
by his father, Rae
BUCHANAN; and is survived by his mother, Olive
Buchanan SMITH; his wife, Patty
RANDALL; his daughter, Laura
KEARNES, her husband Russell; his son, Adam; his daughter, Kate
and his two grandchildren, Quinlan and Veronica
KEARNES.
David's
remarkable courage and strength and his incredibly positive attitude
after his diagnosis with esophageal cancer, gave both him and
his family an extra year and a half of quality life, full of
family gatherings, further travel and laughter. In lieu of flowers
donations may be sent to: The Nature Trust Of British Columbia,
#260 - 1000 Roosevelt Crescent, North Vancouver, British Columbia

John Elwin
WILSON passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, February 13,
2008 at the Shelburne Nursing Home. Elwin was born in Melancthon
Township on May 21, 1928. He was the second
son of George and
Florence (PALLISTER)
WILSON. He was predeceased by his two brothers
Mervyn and Everett. Elwin grew up on the family farm and got
his education at Maybourne School.
Elwin married June
(ACHESON)
WILSON on Wednesday, June 27, 1951,
the 33rd Wedding Anniversary of June's parents Stanley and Olive
(McMILLAN)
ACHESON.
Their marriage took place at Bethel United
Church.
Elwin began a career of trucking gravel in the cities of Brampton
and Toronto shortly after their marriage and continued that career
for 46 years until his retirement at the age of 71.
Elwin and June were the parents of Cathy
WILSON,
Nancy
(WILSON)
KEATING, Lisa
(WILSON)
LANGERAAP and Phillip
WILSON. Elwin is
predeceased by his daughters Cathy and Nancy, who both passed
away from Leukemia.
After raising their children in Dundalk, Elwin and June built
their home on property adjacent to the family farm where June
was raised on the West Backline. They resided there for fifteen
years, before moving into a new home in Dundalk in 2002. Elwin
had a great interest and involvement in the betterment of his
community. He was President of the Dundalk Service Club and when
his health failed and he was no longer as active as he would
like to have been, he was appointed the first Honorary Usher
for Dundalk United Church.
Elwin took great pride and interest in his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and their great-grandchildren and their activities.
He loved to watch hockey games, figure skating, attend baptisms,
weddings and graduation ceremonies for his grandchildren. He
Will be very much missed by them.
Elwin's failing health forced him to spend numerous periods of
time in Markdale Hospital due to complications from diabetes
and hip surgery. It was troubling for his family to come to the
realization that his care should be specialized and Elwin became
a resident at Shelburne Nursing Home for the past three years.
The onset of Alzheimer's disease may have robbed him of his memory,
but it never took away his sense of humour. As aptly described
by his nephew Ted
ACHESON, "
His last few years were more like
living in a waiting room to eternity. All believers can take
comfort that he is now with his Lord and Saviour just as it has
been foretold."
A Celebration of Elwin's life was held on February 16, 2098 at
the McMillan and Jack Funeral Home, Dundalk. Dundalk United Church
minister; Rev. Janet Eriksen and organist Mary Nicholls participated
in the service. Nephew Ted
ACHESON gave the Eulogy and all of
Elwin's ten nephews were pallbearers. His nieces sang a beautiful
"Gaelic
Blessing" accompanied by his sister-in-law Doreen
(ACHESON)
PORTER.
Elwin's grandchildren were flowerbearers. Spring interment
will be in Bethel Cemetery.

the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, became an enthusiastic member

through the Players Club that Libby met Philip and began a love
affair that nourished their shared commitment to close and extended
family that became the foundation of their lives. Early in their
marriage they moved to London, England where Elizabeth supported
the struggling actors who shared their flat. After returning
to Vancouver in 1957, she led a rich and active life; she volunteered
for many arts organizations, was a founding member of the P.P.B.S.,
jointly started a catering company called 'Brown Cow', and co-owned
a small island in the Sechelt Inlet that she christened 'Fluttering
Gussets'. Always warm and welcoming, she was the centre of many
a lively and stimulating dinner party, opening her heart and

voracious reader, adventurous traveler, fabulous cook, brilliant
gardener, and always ready to perform a charade in her own inimitable
style. Elizabeth was a woman of grace, strength and love. Always
