CULLITON,
Margaret
Agatha (née
REICH)
Prophet, wife, mother, grandmother. Born December 31, 1921, in
Otter Creek, Ontario Died October 14, 2007, in Hanover, Ontario,
of Alzheimer's disease, aged 85.
By J.P. HORRIGAN,
Page L8
Margaret Agatha (Marg) was bilingual - German at home, English
elsewhere. The eighth child of Francis
REICH and Josephine
HOFARTH,
she grew up between Walkerton and Mildmay, Ontario
Marg's mother died at the age of 36 in childbirth. After Grade 5,
Marg became a hausfrau - housekeeper - to her father, nanny to
her nine surviving siblings and unpaid farm worker in any other
"free" time.
Intellectually gifted, Marg enjoyed gardening, nature, children
and family, although reading and writing were not her strengths.
She had a green thumb and an acute perception of the relationship
between environment and ecology. She was already an avid promoter
of things natural in the 1930s.
In 1942, Marg moved 30 kilometres away to Ayton, Ontario, and
was hired on as housekeeper at Saint Peter's parish.
Every week she would visit an elderly neighbour who had a twentysomething
nephew, Jim, who also regularly dropped in on his uncle. Marg
and Jim's paths crossed one day, and then on several other occasions.
They ended up walking the same path together for more than 40 years.
It was a challenging marriage with turns in the road, not to
mention hills and dales. Two children arrived in rapid succession,
starting in 1946. Then Marg began displaying bizarre, unexpected
behaviour. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia, a word not even
in Jim CULLITON's vocabulary.
Marg was admitted to hospital locally, then transferred to Victoria
Hospital in London, Ontario In the late 1940s, schizophrenia
was sometimes treated by lobotomy. Jim turned to his family and
to prayer, and decided to permit the operation. It was a huge
risk. It worked. Marg improved significantly and returned home.
Three children later, another less intense hospitalization was
in order. That too was successful. Two more healthy babies arrived.
Marg successfully raised seven children, saw them grow to adulthood
and witnessed each one marry.
In March, 1989, Jim suffered a stroke. Then Marg developed Alzheimer's
disease. Long-term care was the only option. For almost 15 years,
Marg's seven children faithfully visited her in Hanover Care
Centre.
Family and faith were constants in Marg's life, unswerving in
good times and bad. Family was the treatment of choice for her
mental-health issues. After her death, all seven children, eleven
grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a church filled to capacity
came out to celebrate her unbelievable life of achievement.
J.P. HORRIGAN is one of Marg's nephews.
