Richard S.
HETHERINGTON
Richard Hetherington passed away peacefully in his Shoreline, Washington
home on August 22, 2008 at age 95. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana
to Carl and Anna Tharp Hetherington and lived in that area through his
high school graduation. He attended the University of Chicago, where he
earned a law degree. Richard married the love of his life, Leah Stewart,
in 1944 in Tennessee, where he was serving in the USA Army. During his
military career, he was also stationed in North Carolina, Florida,
Georgia and New Jersey in the USA and in Rome, Italy, Garmisch, Germany,
and Korea. While serving in Korea, he assisted in writing the Armistice
Agreement. He retired from the Army as a Major after 20 years of service
and returned to his home in Seattle. He also worked for and retired from
the USA Postal Service. Richard loved the outdoors and, even in his 80's,
could hike faster and farther than people half his age. He and Leah
immersed themselves in nature at their beloved cabin on the shores of
Lake Windfall on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, where they spent their
summers for many years. His love of God, family and country were apparent
to all who knew him. He was an active member of several Anglican
churches, most recently of Saint Barnabas in Shoreline and Saint Francis of
Assisi in Mindemoya, Ontario. Richard loved sharing time with his
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took great pride in
their achievements. Among those who loved him and survive him are Leah,
his wife of 64 years, his children Dick Hetherington (Ann) of Lake Forest
Park, WA, George Hetherington of Shoreline, WA, Elizabeth Sage of
Mililani, HI, and Pam (Don) Bryan of Yucca Valley, CA., along with 12
grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
brother Fred Hetherington and by his sisters Virginia Clements, Jesse
Hetherington and Sue Hetherington. A memorial service was held on Friday,
August 29 at Saint Barnabas Anglican Church. Donations may be sent to St.
Barnabas (2840 N. 155 Street, Shoreline, WA 98155) for their stained
glass memorial fund. Burial will be at the family plot in Saint Louis, MO.
