GUPTA, Professor Narain, M.A., LLB, PhD, F.R.S.C.
Professor Narain GUPTA, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2008. Professor Narain GUPTA was born in Jammu, India. After his Bachelor's degree from his home-town, Narain joined Aligarh University where he completed his Master's degree in Mathematics and his degree in Law simultaneously. While studying mathematics on a Center for Information Systems Research junior research fellowship in Aligarh, Narain accepted a scholarship to the Australian National University where he obtained his PhD. After teaching briefly there, he joined the University of Manitoba, arriving in Winnipeg on July 1, 1967 with his wife Prof. Chander Kanta GUPTA and family. He pursued 'Representation Theory of Combinatorial Groups' with great distinction throughout his career. He became a Full Professor in 1973, a Distinguished Professor in 2000, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2005. He authored or co-authored more than one hundred papers and articles in leading mathematical journals. His work was internationally recognized by many awards and distinctions including Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Killam Fellowship, and Senior North Atlantic Treaty Organization Scientist Award. He gave hundreds of talks in many countries and developed truly international group of collaborators from countries that included India, Russia, Japan and the United States. His solution concerning a conjecture to the elusive 'dimension sub group problem' is one of his finest achievements, earning him a place in The Encyclopedia Brittannica. His editorial contributions to journals include Communications in Algebra, The International Journal of Computations and Algebra, The Journal of Group Theory, and The Journal of Indian Mathematical Society. Books and monographs include Contemporary Mathematics published by the American Mathematical Society and by the University of Manitoba on 'Burnside Groups and Related Topics.' He was adored by his wife Professor Chander Kanta GUPTA. He was very dearly loved by his children Neeru (Yeni HASAN,) Kashyap (Rishma) and Sonya (Armando) and grandchildren Narain, Shiv, Jasmine, and Mariah. He was a loved brother of Som, Vishno, Yog, Ram, Sham, Omkar, Manorma, Rehka, and Kamlesh. He was loved by his many Friends for his vibrant and passionate nature and kind and sincere Friendship. His memories will be forever cherished. My beautiful mother passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Dorothy HASKINS. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of late George Edward W. HEMMANS and her beloved daughter Gayden Ann HEMMANS. Gwen is survived by her loving, devoted daughter Barbara HEMMANS, sons-in-law Jon TURVEY and Erik KALAIDZIS, grandchildren Michael and Farrell TURVEY, sister Reverend Viola WILLIAMSON, brother Gordon HASKINS and spouse Vera CERNETIC and nine nieces and nephews. Gwen lived an exciting and healthy life in Toronto and Vancouver and loved both cities. She will be remembered by family and Friends for her love and true enjoyment of life, caring personality, sense of humour, her elegance and grace, her appreciation of the artistic, aesthetic world and her great gift in connecting people together. Her family was the joy of her life. She will be missed for her deep ability to love, her wonderful laughter and God given gift to be flirtatious and joyous. Her family will remember her for her unconditional love, inner strength and the wisdom in her journey to the other side. There will be a celebration of her life at a later date.

On Wednesday, February 6, 2008, following a sudden illness, Gerald Patrick TABER died at Kingston General Hospital, with his family by his side. He is survived by Joan, his wife of 52 years, his son Geoff (Jacquie GARDNER,) his daughter Shelagh WALSH and his grandchildren, James, Stephen and Phoebe WALSH and Scott and Andrew TABER. Gerry was born in Saskatchewan to Russell and Dorothy TABER (née HASLAM.) He was predeceased by his older brother Harry in 1995. He came east to attend Queen's University (where he received degrees in Arts and in Commerce in 1949) and then Harvard Business School (1952). Gerald worked in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and New York City before returning to Kingston in 1999. His family and Friends will remember a man of great good humour, gentleness and generosity. Friends are invited to join the family at their home in Kingston on Monday, Febr uar y 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. In accordance with Gerald's wishes, a private burial service will be held at a later date. Survived by and greatest father and friend to daughter Michelle DUGAS and son Rick DUGAS. Forever loved Poppy to Sarah, Jesse, Kimberly, Caitlin and Christopher (lil bear), and cherished great-grandpa to Dontae. Survived by his sisters Fran HASSEL and husband Fred and Mary MORGAN, sisters-in-law Kathleen PADVAISKAS and husband John, Barbara McNICHOL and husband John. Also survived by sons Jerry and Terry CLIPPERTON. son of the late Joseph and Edith CLIPPERTON, and brother of the late Wayne CLIPPERTON. Survived by his mother-in-law Vera DUGAS. Uncle and great-uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Doug was the crossing guard for 9 years at North Meadows Public School in Strathroy. Life long friend to Ron and Penny McGREGOR and many others. Following a short illness, shortly before his 90th birthday George passed away in the Wiarton Hospital on July 24th, 2008. Beloved Husband of Norma Jean (CAMPBELL.) He will be greatly missed by his children: Lynda (LITWILLER) husband Larry, Leslie (BLANCHER) husband Richard, and son David. Dear grandfather to Shelley (BRETHAUER,) husband Jamie, Glen (LITWILLER,) wife Kelly, Neil and Kim BLANCHER. Great-grandfather to Shelby, Riley and Brooke-Lynn who loved spending time with him in his Sauble Beach home. Predeceased by 3 brothers, Frank, Herbert and Harold. Survived by sisters Laurna HASSUM, Ena McKELLAR and Dorothy NAKULAK. A member of Zion Amabel United Church (Sauble Beach), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, George served in World War 2 for 6 years. George lived for his wife, children and fishing, and was a big Blue Jays baseball fan. Born in Toronto, daughter of the late William WALTON and the former Helena ANDERSON. Helen earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Toronto and attended the Shaw Business School. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and was a lifelong member of the Women's Missionary Society. Beloved wife of Noël DE WEVER. Loving mother of Robert DE WEVER and wife Marian, Ruth TEENINGA and husband Pete, John DE WEVER and wife Frances. Cherished grandmother of Emma, Maklane, Tina and husband James, Anna, Pieter, Luke, Grace, Jesse and Jordan. Also survived by sisters Mary HILL and husband Ron, Elizabeth KIDNEW and husband Al, brother-in-law Bill MURPHY, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sons David (1999), Paul (1990) and sister Margaret (2007). Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Wednesday May 7th from 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Stratford on Thursday at 11 a.m. Rev. Helen Neil DE WEVER, age 81, of Stratford passed away peacefully at the Stratford General Hospital on Sunday May 4, 2008.

Helen HASTON (née BEATTY) in her 92nd year, passed away at Gateway Haven, Wiarton, on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Beloved wife of the late George HASTON (1990.) Dear mom of Mick and Patricia HASTON of Courtenay, British Columbia, Robert HASTON of Dundas, Jane and David MIHLIK of London, and Barb and Greg SMITH of Wiarton. Grandmother of Holly (HASTON) GRANT, Andrew HASTON, Tina (HASTON) MICHAILESCU, and Rachel (HASTON) PAQUETTE; Jennifer (HASTON) HAYWARD, Kelly HASTON, and Patrick HASTON; Ian and Ben SMITH. Great-grandmother of Tommy, Meaghan, Redd, Tanner, Candra, Ethan, and James. She will be missed by her sister Jean (Beatty) NELSON, and sister-in-law Audrey BEATTY. Predeceased by her parents Jean and Frank BEATTY, and brothers Ted, Jim, and Ron BEATTY. Helen loved her family, Baseball (Blue Jays), a good card game, and ice cream. We will miss her for wonderful baking, sewing, knitting, and quilting talents. At Helens request, there will be no visitation. A private family service has been held. Arrangements entrusted to the Tannahill Funeral Home. Interment Zion cemetery. Memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
