HAIRE, Ethel Margaret (née GUDLAUGSON) (1920-2008)
Passed away March 9th in Toronto in her 88th year. Mom embraced caregivers, Friends and family with love and laughter. Her innate caring, graciousness, beauty, and sense of humour prevailed over the effects of Alzheimers and stroke, as did her love of music and joy in song. Predeceased by her loving husband, John Edwin (Jack), and survived by her daughters Barbara and Catherine, sister Elma HELGASON, and sisters-in-law Fern and Vera GUDLAUGSON. Beloved sister of the late Martha (Jack), Oscar, Len, Hale (Folace) and Clarence, and sister-in-law of the late Bob (Estelle), Wallace (Peggy) HAIRE, and Chris HELGASON. Youngest child of Icelandic immigrants Olina JONSDOTTIR and Magus GUDLAUGSON, Ethel was born on a homestead near Clairmont, Alberta. Her musical talent emerged early, and earned her scholarships to study in Banff and in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory. She established a successful performing and teaching career, sharing her love of music with many students. Ethel supported her husband Jack through his long career with Abitibi, from where he retired as Corporate Director and Vice President Finance in 1978. She blessed our home with warmth and kindness, as well as her gift of music. Sincere thanks to her caregivers who sustained her with a loving and supportive environment. She will be missed by Cecille, Cathy, Esther, Gloria, Glenn, and Fatima. Thanks also to Judith, Evangeline, Louise, and Louis, to Barbara whose craniosacral treatments helped prolong her quality of life, and to her medical team. Friends may call at the Turner and Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke, (between Islington and Kipling Aves.) Friday 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Saturday March 22, 2008 at 3 o'clock. If desired, donations may be made to the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
