Father, husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, leading

CURRENT,

Douglas Paterson
BRYCE was the
son of the late Peter
BRYCE, moderator
of the United Church and minister of the Metropolitan United
Church in Toronto.
He met his late wife, Elizabeth
FIELD, at a university dance.
They were married the day after he graduated from medical school
on April 4, 1942, by his father.
Douglas was known by a variety of titles and monikers. If you
knew him as Captain
BRYCE in the Medical Corps during the Second
World War, you saw him riding around Europe on a Harley-Davidson
motorcycle dispensing rum while saving lives and ducking bullets.
If you knew him as Doctor
BRYCE, you knew he was a world leader
in head and neck surgery who pioneered surgical techniques and
established the Laryngeal Laboratory at the University of Toronto
with support from the Charlie Conacher research fund. A compassionate,
charming doctor, he was loved by his patients. He travelled the
world as a lecturer, clinician and examiner, leading many national
and international professional organizations.
If you knew him as Professor
BRYCE, you knew that in 1966 he
became the first full-time professor of otolaryngology at the
University of Toronto, a position he held until 1982, upon which
he became professor emeritus. During this time the department
doubled in size, graduating six students a year and formalizing
a post-residency fellowship program. He lectured and published
widely, and was recognized with awards and medals.
If you knew him as Dad or Prof, you were a family member or close
friend and knew he never took himself too seriously. His adoring
children - Peter, Bonnie, Dub and Alison - lived a busy life
between Toronto, winters skiing at Osler Bluff in Collingwood,
Ontario, and summers spent on Flatrock, their island on Georgian
Bay.
The island tennis court was the scene of hilarious family tournaments.
Prof was known for his "big scoop," a grand forehand shot that
was still rising as it hit the back fence. As a handyman, he
had a large, red toolbox filled with absolutely nothing of use.
A tube of Goop was his answer to most fix-it challenges - it
virtually held together his boat, Doug's Delight.
If you knew him as Big Doug, you were one of 13 grandchildren
who happily ate his macaroni casseroles and shortbread cookies,
rose to his challenge during dinner debates and knew, as we all
did, that he was a kind, loving man whom people loved to be around.
He will be dearly missed.

Of Owen Sound and Tobermory passed away peacefully surrounded
by her family at Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Thursday,

years, Mary was especially delighted by visits from her great-grandchildren
Jessie, Kayla, Michael, Tyson, Caleb, Madison and Chloe. Mary
was the daughter of the late Rev. Robert
SMITH and Dora (nee
FIELDS) and was predeceased by her sisters Dora and Jenny and
her brothers Herbert and Arthur. Growing up she lived in many
small towns in the Eastern townships and Quebec and then attended
McGill University and
MacDonald Normal School in Montreal. After
teaching for one year, she enrolled in the Canadian Women's Army
Corps and while serving in London, England met and married Harold.
Mary was a spirited, independent and intelligent woman. While
raising her family, she returned to teaching and continued her
education, graduating from Queen's University (1971) and qualifying
as a primary educational specialist and teaching librarian. She
was instrumental in designing and establishing elementary school
libraries in Owen Sound. The young children loved story time
with Mrs. COTTON and she had many devoted library helpers over
the years. Mary had many varied interests (reading, music (piano),
travel, knitting, bridge, rocks) and like her husband Harold,
continued to learn and take on new challenges. Mary and Harold
were tremendous role models for their children, students and
Friends. Sincere appreciation is expressed to the staff of the
Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital for the loving care provided
to Mary. Visitation will be held at the George Funeral Home,
430 Mary Street, Wiarton on Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 7: 00 to
