SCHULZ, Elsie M. (née SMYTHE)
Of Union, passed away at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Monday, June 2, 2008, in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late Jack J. SCHULZ (July 1, 2001.) Dearly loved mother of Regina RYCROFT and her husband David of R.R.#3, Shedden, and Florian SCHULZ and his wife Florence of R.R.#1, Southwold. Sister of the late T. Elkin SMYTHE. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Born in White's Cove, New Brunswick, September 6, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Musetta (ELKIN) SMYTHE. Elsie moved to Union from Ancaster, Ontario in 1973. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public visitation and a private family funeral service will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington Street Thomas. Interment in Union Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario gratefully acknowledged.

McDONALD, Elizabeth " Becky" (née FOSTER)
Peacefully at Kelso Pines, Owen Sound on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. Becky McDONALD (née FOSTER) formerly of Hemet, California in her 95th year. Becky was born in Glen Ewen, Saskatchewan and was the daughter of the late James and Marguretta HORROCKS) FOSTER. Beloved wife of the late Donald McDONALD. Loving mother of Max of R.R.#1, Paisley, Marilyn SARGENT of Murrieta, California and Lynda ELKINS of Aliso Viejo, California. Becky will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Debbie, Cathy, Albert and Scott and her many great-grandchildren. Special aunt to Shirley TIMBURY and Mavis HADDLETON. Predeceased by her sisters, Helen STEPHENSON of Chesley and Gladys APPLETON of Estevan, Saskatchewan and her brothers, Max FOSTER of Mississauga and Charlie FOSTER of Carnduff, Saskatchewan. At Becky's request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family. Special thanks to Fred Clarke for his care and support and to the staff of Kelso Pines for their excellent care and compassion. CRONYN, Margaret Valliere
(January 16, 1922-April 13th, 2008)
Mum died peacefully in Toronto at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, James CRONYN and her later-life companion Jack VAUGHAN. She will be missed by her three children Laleah (Michael GIBSON,) Peter (Stacey LISTER) and Elizabeth (Robert TOPPING;) her grandchildren James and Kristin MacINTOSH, Tenley and Brooke GIBSON, Blythe, James and Laleah CRONYN, Patrick, Katrina and Douglas TOPPING; her nephews Alex BOVEY and Jeff CRONYN and nieces Sheila WOOLNER, Leslie PUNTER and Martha CRONYN and former daughter-in-law Liz BARRETT. Daughter of Major General W.H.P. and Phyllis ELKINS, Val was born in Kingston and lived in Ottawa, Halifax, Vancouver and Toronto. She attended Havergal College and spent her summers in Metis Beach. In 1943, Val joined the Canadian Red Cross as an ambulance driver and served overseas in England during the war. After returning and marrying Jim, Val began her volunteer career which spanned five decades. Her volunteerism included the Junior League, the Children's Aid Society, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Canadian Friends of Museums. Val was also actively involved with the Havergal College and the Toronto Golf Club. She always gave generously of herself both to her family and volunteer activities. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Bradgate Arms and to the caregivers in Vancouver who cared for Mum over the last few years and made her days much brighter as she coped with Parkinson's disease. Visitation will be at Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Ave on Thursday April 17th from 4: 00 to 8:00 p.m. A service will be held on Friday April 18th at 11: 00 a.m. at St. Clements Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Havergal College, The Parkinson's Society or the Art Gallery of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.

REHDER, John Edward " Ned" (1916-2008)
John Edward (Ned) REHDER passed away at Leaside Retirement Home on Wednesday July 9th, 2008 after and long and valiant struggle with dementia. Born in Bowmanville in 1916, he worked for the family business, The Bowmanville Foundry, until attending McGill University to study metallurgy. He graduated in 1943 and married Jocelyn BOWDEN. They took up residence in Windsor, Ontario until moving to Ottawa, where he worked for the Canadian Government at the Dept. of Mines and Metallurgy doing research and development. Later he moved to Montreal to take up the post of Vice President of R&D for the Canada Iron Co. While working for this firm he won the Peter L. Simpson gold medal from the American Foundrymen's Society. He stayed with Canada Iron until the 1960's when he left to work for himself as a Consultant. He and Jocelyn divorced in 1973 and in 1975 he moved to Toronto and continued his consulting business. In 1979 he married his second wife, Mignon ELKINS. Upon his retirement he was invited to the Department of Mines and Metallurgy at the University of Toronto as a research assistant. This involved doing work with the Department of Archeology, a subject that gave him the chance to indulge in his passion for history, with particular interest in the Minoan culture. Ned had over a thousand papers published in various trade magazines and journals, and, at the age of 85 had a book "The Mastery and Uses of Fire in Antiquity" published by McGill/ Queens University Press. It was re-published in paperback two years later. He leaves behind his five children from his first marriage; Christine HORNE, Eric, Jonathon, Mark and Michael, his daughters-in-law Maxine REHDER and Jane BIGGS and son-in-law Lee HORNE and his loving and devoted wife Mignon Elkins REHDER. Family will receive Friends at the York Visitation, Chapel and Reception Centre, 160 Beecroft Road (north of Sheppard Ave. west of Yonge St.), Toronto, 416-221-3404 on Monday July 14th from 3: 30 p.m. until time of funeral service in the chapel at 4: 30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.
