BLAIS-
DIAMOND,
Margaret (née
JOHNSON)
Joyfully entered the world on October 10, 1919 and quietly left
on April 12, 2008. She spent 88 years living, loving and appreciating
the world around her. Born to Hugh and Myrtle
JOHNSON, sister
to Vera, Jean and Nonie, she spent her early years as a "tomboy"
playing tennis, climbing trees, skipping school and doing a variety
of water activities. Her lifelong love of swimming and the serenity
of water began with her dodging ships on the Detroit River in
a sailboat or swimming. Margaret was in the Air Force during
World War 2 and began her medical career there working with the
Doctors and then in Medical Records. In 1949 while living in
Toronto she met and married Aime
BLAIS, together they raised
six children and lived in a variety of farms in Southern Ontario
and eventually settling in Strathroy. Times were tough on the
farms but with lots of love, and determination they weathered
the storms and Margaret even completed a Hospital Administration
program at University of Saskatchewan. She was in Public Relations,
and as Assistant Executive Director for over 30 years at the
Strathroy Hospital loving it, and totally believed in positive
leadership and the balance of work and family life. To say Margaret
was proud of her six children was an understatement. Her unconditional
love and unwavering support was there for all of us throughout
our lives. She spent her retirement living on Lake Huron with
her second husband Bert
DIAMOND and swimming in many oceans and
lakes. Bert died in 1987. For the last 15 years she lived with
her son Paul in Toronto and together they roamed the world. Margaret
loved life, she was kind, funny, curious and keen to meet new
people and enjoy new experiences. She always said "Yes, I'll
go" We will miss her dearly and will hold her strong values of
family and respect forever. We are her proud children. David
(Joanie and Thomas), Don (Ruth, Lisa, Chris, Angela and Hannah),
Paul (Chris), Michele (Cliff, Ian and Paul) Doug (Michael), Nicole
(Holly,) and her special daughter Tena
GRAY/GREY.
Visitation will
be held on Monday, April 21st from 2-3 p.m. where the Funeral
Service will be held at 3 p.m. in Denning Bros. Funeral Home,
Strathroy. Tea to follow. Celebrate her life by doing something
you love or donating to a charity. A tree will be planted as
a living memorial to Margaret.

DIAS,
Solange
Marie
Doctor, nurse, paramedic, mother. Born March 7, 1970, in Chagny,
France. Died October 2, 2007, in Toronto of breast cancer, aged
By Peter KATIS,
Page L6
I was fortunate enough to have met Solange 17 years ago, when
we were both in university. I remember the first time I saw her,
in late autumn. The sun was setting behind me and all of its
rays seemed to focus on this beautiful face before me… the most
beautiful face I had ever seen. Her name in French means "Sun
Angel."
From the moment of her diagnosis of cancer in February, 2006,
Solange had only one fear - saying goodbye to the "greatest achievement"
of her life: our daughter Catherine.
Solange would have thrown everything away for the opportunity
to raise Catherine. To truly appreciate the significance of this,
you have to understand what Solange had accomplished.
She was a doctor. Before this she had been a nurse, and before
that a paramedic. Inexplicably, she knew she would die young,
and she lived her life compressing time into milestones with
great bursts of activity. Yet she took the time to smell the
roses. She loved flowers.
Her parents, Armando and Maria, had emigrated from Portugal to
France - where Solange was born - and then to Canada when she
was four years old. Although she had lived in Toronto most of
her life, she always carried herself with a quiet and unassuming
French elegance.
She had a soft spot for the vulnerable and always rooted for
the underdog. She was modest, yet never compromised her integrity.
Solange was that rare kind of beautiful woman who didn't know
just how beautiful she was. She made those around her feel special,
and inspired devotion because she was devoted to the end. When
she graduated from medical school, she decided to practise family
medicine with a focus on palliative care because she wanted to
comfort the dying.
Her greatest love was reserved for her child. Catherine Alexandra
Dias KATIS came our way on August 11, 2005. Solange was ecstatic,
and loved her with all of her capacity to love. She had plans
to take her to plays, to the zoo, to the library - to have her
experience all of the beautiful things in this world.
Then, six months later, the diagnosis came. Following the devastating
news, Solange set up Catherine's future bedroom and playroom,
and wrote a letter for her little girl to be read when she was
old enough to understand.
And on October 2, I held your left hand, Solange, the same hand
I had held two years before when you pushed our little Catherine
out of your womb, and I saw you take your last breath. The last
thing that stopped was your heart, your heart that had the capacity
to embrace the world and everybody in it - but most desired just
to embrace Catherine.
Peter KATIS is Solange's husband.
