They want to 'win for her'
The midget girls squad, which lost a coach in a car crash, wants
to play in the championship.
By Patrick
MALONEY, Sun Media, Wed., April 2, 2008
The death of an Oxford County hockey coach has stunned her players,
but it's unlikely to stop them.
Members of the Embro Edge midget girls squad, reeling from the
death of assistant coach Carolyn
PIETT, 23, in a crash Monday,
were to decide last night whether they would play in this weekend's
league championship in Vaughan.
"The girls want to go and win for her," said Michelle
CRANDALL,
who has a daughter on the team and two other children who grew
up with PIETT.
"They said Carolyn would want them to play."
PIETT, of Embro, was killed on her way to work at Autodata Solutions
in London when her car collided with a transport truck north
of Thamesford at 8 a.m. Monday. The truck driver, Lloyd
DEVEAU
of Midland, wasn't hurt.
Several
Friends yesterday remembered
PIETT, who coached the team
with her father, Ron, as a fun-loving person who was always happy.
"Always had a smile on her face," said teammate Leanne
RENKEMA,
18. "She could be angry and she would have a smile on her face."
The loss has been tough for the small community where
PIETT grew
up with three sisters.
CRANDALL knew the athletic, outgoing woman
since PIETT was in kindergarten.
"You knew if she was in the room -- she was just that type,"
CRANDALL said last night.
PIETT's car was crushed by the transport truck at Oxford County
Road 119 and Zorra Road 74, an intersection controlled by stop
signs for east-west traffic.
The car was hit on the passenger side and pushed into the west
ditch south of the intersection. Police closed the roads for
about five hours while wreckage was cleared.
Although it was raining at the time of the collision, weather
isn't believed to be a factor, police said.
Visitation is slated for tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. at Longworth Funeral Home in Woodstock. A funeral will
be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Knox United Church in Embro.

John also leaves behind numerous nephews and
nieces.
John ANDREWS attended Kamloops High School. In 1947, he received
a B.A. in Physics from the University of British Columbia, where
he met Dorie, the love of his life. He and Dorie were married
on August 28, 1948. After teacher training, they taught at various
small schools in communities such as Squamish and Salmon Arm,
British Columbia In 1955, they packed up little Billie and Donnie
and drove to Chicago, where John received a Ph.D. in the new
field of Education Administration from the University of Chicago
in 1957. Choosing to return to Canada, they moved to Edmonton,
where the arrival of Jeff and Lorraine completed the family.
John was a Professor of Education Administration at the University
of Alberta from 1958 to 1965. In 1965, the family moved to Toronto,
where John was the Associate Director of the newly formed Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education. In 1973, John and Dorie and
family returned to their British Columbia roots. John was the
Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of British
Columbia from 1973 to 1980, and remained a Professor there until
his retirement as Dean Emeritus in 1985. John held a deep personal
and professional commitment to the public education system both
in Canada and around the world.
Perhaps John's most inspirational accomplishment was his total
devotion to Dorie after she suffered a severe stroke in 1990.
Together, Dad and Mom remade their lives, travelled the world,
doted on their grandchildren and cared for each other through
all that came their way.
Special thanks to John's caregiver Alicia Rhodes, who brightened
Dad's final years.
Family and Friends are invited to attend a celebration of his
life on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 2: 00 p.m. at First Memorial,
Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, B.C.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the John H.M. and Doris D. Andrews
Research and Development Award Endowment Fund, University of
British Columbia, would be appreciated.
