GRAHAM,
John
Umstead, B.Sc. E.E., P.Eng.
Lt. Cdr., CD, Royal Canadian Navy (Ret'd)
(September 15, 1929-February 7, 2008)
After a courageous battle with cancer, John died at the Powell
River General Hospital after being cared for lovingly at home
by his family for many months. Born in Stratford, Ontario to
James and Jane
(UMSTEAD)
GRAHAM, educated in Toronto and graduated
from the University of New Brunswick in 1955, with a B.Sc. in
Electrical Engineering. While in Fredericton, New Brunswick,
he met and married the love of his life, Ruth
JACQUARD, his wife
of 55 years. John served 25 years with the Royal Canadian Navy
on both coasts, in Ottawa and two years in England, as an exchange
officer, at the submarine base in Portland Bill, Dorset. He,
Ruth and their two children, David and Paula travelled extensively
throughout England and Europe before returning to Canada to their
home in Victoria. John retired from the navy in 1975 and consulted
to the marine industry until 1986. They moved to Qualicum Beach,
British Columbia, where they built a lovely new home and designed
a beautiful Rhododendron garden which they enjoyed for 15 years.
They moved to Powell River in 2004 to be closer to their children
and grandchildren. Always a gentleman, John could keep an audience
captivated with his wonderful sense of humour and endless stories
of his travels. He was respected and loved by all who knew him.
He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Ruth, his beloved and caring
children, David (Joanne), Paula (Brian) and six wonderful grandchildren,
Rob and Sam Graham, Scott, Ian, Sydney and Kate Barnes. His only
sister, Jane Anne
CATALANO
(Tony) and many cousins, nieces and
nephews, as well as the many Friends he has made in his lifetime
will be saddened by his passing. He is predeceased by his parents
and his younger brother, Jimmy. Heartfelt thanks to his doctor,
Bruce Hobson and all the nursing care given by the Palliative
care nurses, Caroline, Lee and Chris, and Community Health Care
worker, Carol. In keeping with John's wishes, a private memorial
will be held in the Spring for family and Friends. In lieu of
flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Powell River
General Hospital Foundation CAT scan fund.

CATTELL,
Leslie
Bernard
Sadly,
Leslie
Bernard
CATTELL succumbed to cancer on Saturday,
July 19th, 2008. A man built on the experiences gained growing
up in London during the Blitz. Serving first in the Home Guard
as a teenager and then with the 7th Hussars during the Battle
for Europe. These experiences helped to profoundly shape a man
with a deep sense of honour and a clear understanding of right
from wrong. Brought to Canada by Ontario Hydro in 1958, he came
with the intention of staying 2 years, only to live out his remaining
years in a country he grew to love. He raised 3 children in Toronto
with his wife Kate and adored his 5 grandchildren. We will be
forever touched by his sense of humour and an appreciation for
all things practical, salvageable and reconditioned. His family
will miss him deeply in ways they do not yet know, especially
his grandchildren; Kyra, Nolan, Colin, Remy and Reilly. Those
who knew him would see a fondness for dogs of any kind, a love
of the maple tree, the lakes and rivers of Canada and a Britain
that didn't include Tony Blair. Nothing would please him more
than to know that you were raising a dram in his memory tonight.
Tally Ho Biggles! The family is deeply thankful for the exceptional
caring and attention provided by Doctor Ron
TWIDDY, the Victorian
Order of Nurses of Trenton, the Cobourg Cancer Treatment Centre
and the generous community of Brighton. A private family service
was held on Friday, July 25th, 2008. Those wishing to make a
donation to the Victorian Order of Nurses of Trenton are asked
to contact Walas Funeral Home in Brighton: 613-475-2121.

HARTOG,
Robbert, C.M., M.A., O.C.
Robbert HARTOG passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008, 1 day
shy of his 89th birthday; he will be sorely missed by his close
family and many dear Friends and colleagues who benefited from
his warmth, hospitality and caring heart. Robbert truly believed
that family and Friends were to be treasured. Robbert, pater
familias par excellence, is survived by his sister Rose Marjan
HARTOG and his ten nieces and nephews, he was predeceased by
his sister Ellen and his brother Dolf. Robbert was born in the
Netherlands, the eldest son and second child of Arthur
HARTOG
and Jenny HARTOG-
CATZ. He came to Canada in the beginning of
1941, received his M.A. in political science at the University
of Toronto and worked for Massey Harris. In the last years of
the war he served in the Netherlands Forces as an economist,
who helped bring the financial situation back in balance. Robbert
asked to be demobilized in Canada after his tour of duty. He
had chosen Canada as his future home. Robbert is best described
as a 'Canadian Treasure', a man honoured by his country for distinguished
service with the Order of Canada, an outstanding member of the
business community, an able director of a number of Corporations,
a philanthropist who supported many worthy causes, who never
shied away from getting into the trenches and serving the needs
of others through organizations such as Canadian Executive Services
Association, Boy Scouts of Canada, The Wye Marsh, Young Men's
Christian Association, World Wildlife Federation, Canadian Crossroads
International, Georgian College and University of Waterloo, just
to name a few. Yes, he was a brilliant business man and a passionate
fighter for social issues. 'To give back to society' is what
he taught his nephews and nieces and the many other young people
who he mentored. Robbert, ever the gallant Captain, will be fondly
remembered by all those who sailed with him aboard the Sea Flight,
Clyte and d'Eendracht, lo' those many years on voyages of discovery
on the Great Lakes and beyond to Newfoundland. Robbert you will
be sadly missed by your extended family and Friends from many
countries around the world over. A final toast 'To an absent
friend.' A community celebration of Robbert's life will be held
on Thursday, January 31st, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. at the Cathedral
Room of the Brooklea Golf and Country Club, located South of
Midland Highway 93. A funeral service will take place on Friday,

at 11 a.m. Following the service, guests are invited for refreshments
at the Burgundy Ballroom of the Midland Best Western Highland
