BORDA,
Doctor
Ivan
T. (1922-2008)
One of the outstanding members of the London medical community,
the former head of the gastroenterology department at St Joseph's
Hospital,
Doctor
Ivan
BORDA, passed away at the age of 85, on April 19th
2008 at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, following a heart attack.
He is deeply mourned by his wife Joyce, stepchildren Jeffrey
HAFELFINGER and Caroline and Peter
KRESTA, grandchildren Gregory
and Alice and a large number of Friends and colleagues. He had
an adventurous life, graduating from medicine in 1951 in Budapest,
his birthplace, then serving as a physician in the Hungarian
Army, seeing the inside of a communist prison on trumped up charges,
emigrating to Canada after the 1956 revolution, finishing his
training in internal medicine, gastroenterology and pharmacology
in London and Boston.. He was a superb physician and an early
expert in epidemiological pharmacology, pioneering the research
in adverse event monitoring and clinical trials methodology.
He had a triple career: in addition to being appointed as a consultant
gastroenterologist at Saint_Joseph's Hospital in 1963, he worked
for the World Health Organization in Geneva and as consultant
in the pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland. In 1981 he returned
to Europe (Switzerland) and divided his time between Basel, consulting
for the pharmaceutical industry, and Geneva, where he did much
extremely rewarding work for World Health Organization primarily
in third world countries. He was fiercely patriotic towards Canada,
and always grateful to have been given a home here when he was
stateless, returning therefore to Canada in 1990, first to Ottawa
and then Cambridge still doing occasional work for World Health
Organization until 1995. He was an inveterate globetrotter, knowing
a great deal about people and places and a cultured man, a lover
of opera, theater, fine dining, tennis and soccer. He had the
bearing, style and courtly manner of a Hungarian aristocrat,
yet he was a generous and warm friend, a raconteur and witty
conversationalist who easily earned the love and respect of all
who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his
name to the Saint_Joseph's Hospital Foundation.

BORISS,

Farmer, refugee, gardener, singer, husband, father, uncle, vecpapa.

DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS,
Page L6
'Grow where you're planted." Fresh potatoes, warm from the earth,
ripe tomatoes from his own vines, salads from his garden - life's
riches were simply grand for our vecpapa, Nikolajs (Nick)
BORISS,
who was forced to turn his back on his country and begin again.
Nick grew up on a prosperous farm in Rezekne, Latvia. The only
one in his family of nine children to attend university, Nick
studied at the Agricultural College in Jelgava, Latvia. While
there, he met the love of his life, Emma
DZENIS.
They were married
in March, 1940. By July, the first Soviet occupation of Latvia
had begun.
Nick and Emma knew that they should leave the country in order
to survive, but finishing their education was just as important.
They continued to study and attempted to find joy in wartime
life wherever they could.
In 1943, they decided to flee their beloved country in advance
of the invading Russian army. Nick asked his parents to leave
as well and to meet them on the shore that night - they didn't.
He never saw them again.
With a newborn baby and only the clothes on their backs, Nick
and Emma and Nick's sister Zenija travelled across the Baltic
Sea in the middle of the night on an overloaded fishing boat
with hundreds of others. After several days, they finally landed
in Sweden and welcomed a new life, and another son, shortly afterward.
In 1949, still afraid of the proximity of Soviet influence, they
decided to move to Canada. Nick, Emma and their sons Uldis (Richard)
and Ivar eventually settled on a farm just west of Orangeville,
Ontario Daily demands of a dairy herd, mixed grains and chickens
meant life was busy and full.
Above all, Nick and Emma gardened. They grew hundreds of flower
beds. Retirement at 65 was well deserved and they gardened to
their heart's content.
A miraculous day in 1997 brought the news that one of Nick's
brothers had survived Soviet internment, and although he had
passed away since, he had two sons who lived in Chicago. A reunion
with his nephews Bruno and Aleks blessed Nick's family with many
cherished visits full of singing, drinking and Latvian storytelling.
Sadly, Emma died suddenly in 1998.
Nick's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought

his famous ear wiggles.
