BOLENDER, Rose
Wife, mother, grandmother, sister, matriarch. Born March 5, 1926, in Holland Landing, Ontario Died February 18 in Lindsay, Ontario, of kidney cancer, aged 81.
By David BOLENDER, Page L10
Rose was born on the SPEZIALI family farm near the Holland Marsh and spent her formative years living through the Great Depression. It took until 1950 for electricity to arrive at the farm.
What Rose lacked in material goods was more than compensated for by having a close, loving and giving family. Rose went to school for only a few years before she had to quit to nurse her ailing mother and run the household for her father and four brothers. This shaped her loving and giving nature. Hard work and long hours were part of farm life, and Rose cheerfully accepted her duties and responsibilities, as well as her brothers' teasing.
Rose met the love of her life when Reg BOLENDER's family bought a general store in Holland Landing. She had accepted a marriage proposal from someone else, but called it off after meeting Reg. They married in the fall of 1951 at the family farm and enjoyed 50 years together.
Rose spent the next several decades raising a family in Toronto and contributing to the household economy by working at retail positions in the food industry. This suited her well because it satisfied her sweet tooth - a trait she passed on to her children, David, Keith, Brian, and Anne.
On one anniversary, her children gave her and Reg a gift certificate to a five-star restaurant. Rose refused to go until the whole family agreed to go out together.
With an inheritance from a beloved uncle, Rose and Reg bought the great passion in their life - a cottage on head Lake in Ontario's Kawartha Lakes. This quickly became the social centre for family and Friends.
It was a sanctuary for Rose and Reg, their counterbalance to the demands of work life and city living in Toronto. When it came time for them to slow down and think about retirement, they moved to Lindsay and spent every weekend at the cottage and much of the summers there after Reg retired.
Once she moved to Lindsay it became agony to go shopping anywhere in town with Rose. Because she worked at the Dairy Queen and Reg worked at a local car dealership, they knew a great many people. Shopping with Rose meant stopping every few minutes to chat and gossip. This situation did not improve after Rose left the Dairy Queen, because she became involved with a Kawartha Lakes line dancing group.
The last years of Rose's life were filled with physical challenges. She experienced quadruple heart bypass surgery, a mishap after a knee replacement and a short and intense battle with cancer. Through all of this, she maintained her cheery and loving nature to the end.
David BOLENDER is Rose's son.

Fire claims life of local woman
By John EDWARDS, Page 3
The death of a woman in a townhouse fire in Collingwood on Saturday has rocked the entire neighbourhood, according to one resident.
Fire crews were called to a town house complex on Matthew Way at about 10 p.m., on Saturday.
According to Collingwood Fire Chief Trent ELYEA, the fire started in the kitchen while a man and a woman were in the home. He said they were not responsive when crews arrived and could have been asleep. The fire has been ruled as "accidental in nature," and started in the stove area.
"It was not a malfunction," said fire prevention officer Robert BOLT.
BOLT pegged the damage at about $125,000.
The woman was taken to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The man was airlifted to Hospital in Hamilton where he was put in a hyperbaric chamber, according to ELYEA, to bring his carbon monoxide levels down before he could be treated for his injuries - burns and smoke inhalation.
There were also two dogs and a cat in the home at the time. One of the cats died in the fire, the second lived and paramedics attempted to revive the dog but it was then taken to a local veterinarian. ELYEA was not aware of the condition of the dog.
Neighbours who lived next door confirmed that Ken and Sharon McDOUGALL lived in unit 306 at the Matthew Way complex, although Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police have not released the name of the victim as they are still attempting to notify the next of kin.
Julie, who asked that The Connection not publish her last name, said the couple kept to themselves, adding Mrs. McDOUGALL had an illness that kept her in bed a lot oft he time.
"They were very nice people," she said.
Julie said she wasn't aware that a fire was happening until her neighbour told her.
"Because there was no flames," she said.
She said it has had a big impact on the area.
"It's sad, it's a tragedy," she said. Another neighbour Drew who also didn't want his last name published, said everyone in the complex is feeling a sense of loss.
"Everybody is going to have a day of mourning," he said.
Julie said her kids have taken the incident very hard. Her nine-year-old daughter set up a memorial outside the home with a cross and flowers.
"She is very emotional," she said. Julie said some neighbours have been having nightmares over the incident and others had to leave their homes for the night because they were so upset.
"It's something that you always fear can happen, but you never hope it happens," she said.
ELYEA said the smoke alarms were working but the alarms tended to go off quite regularly and neighbours assumed it was another false alarm.
"That is accurate," he said. "There was a complacency issue."
A crew of three firefighters arrived on the scene first and was able to get both occupants outside so paramedics could treat them.
"They did an excellent knockdown and excellent recovery," ELYEA said of his crew.

In loving memory of a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer on April 13, 2005. Our hearts were heavy as we watched you fade away. But since we saw you sleeping, so peacefully and free of pain, it has been some consolation knowing that you will not go through such suffering again.
Our hearts still ache with sadness, The secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,
No one will ever know.
We miss you more and more each day, as time passes by.
Tears we shed we can wipe away, But the ache in our hearts will always stay.
We love and miss you so deeply, your husband, Nick, your children, Sylvana and Robert, Joe and Jennifer, your grandchildren, Aedan and Craig, and your loving "adopted mom," Georgie BOLTON.
