LINTON,
M.
Charlotte "
Peetie" (née
MURPHY)
Passed away suddenly, at home, on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at
the age of 92. Born in Halifax to E.J.
MURPHY and Ethel
(SULLIVAN,)
Peetie was the middle child of five, Catherine and Barbara, who
predeceased her, a younger sister, Carol, and brother, Edward.
She shared many happy stories of her family growing up in their
beautiful house on Rhuland Street, as well as the good times
enjoyed summering in Jollimore at "Unadilla" on the shores of
The North West Arm. Peetie attended the Convent of the Sacred
Heart, where she made many lifelong Friends. She went on to Dalhousie,
receiving a B.A. in 1937, and then to McGill, where she earned
a graduate degree in Library Science. She loved to tap dance
and starred in the "Red and White Review" at McGill. Well-educated
and an avid reader, Peetie began her career as a librarian at
the Halifax Herald where she worked for the next 10 years, introducing
many innovations. She did volunteer work in Halifax during the
war including decoding navy messages and editing soldiers' letters.
Peetie married Bill in 1948, and began raising their family,
but she always found time to contribute to her community. She
worked through the Library Committee to help found the Halifax
Library. She was a long-time member of the Junior League, and
served on the Board of the Victorian Order of Nurses. Peetie
was a generous and thoughtful friend to many. Whether visiting
people in their times of need, or contributing extensively to
her bridge and book clubs, she was always thinking of others.
Throughout her life, the Catholic faith was always important
to her, and she followed "The Golden Rule" as a matter of course.
After Bill retired, they spent considerable time in Florida and
Chester, enjoying Friends and family. She became a remarkable
strength for Bill during the latter years of his life, caring
for him until he died in 2006. In her later years, Peetie was
surrounded, at her home on Studley Avenue, by good Friends, her
daughter, Cathy, and had the care and Friendship of Rosanne Bedard,
Hedy Gavel, and Ina Burke. Mom was the glue of our family and
our needs always came first. She is survived by her children,
Cathy BETHUNE (Dr. Graeme), Halifax; Anne
GREENE (Erick), Missoula,
Montana.; Bill (Marilynne
DAY), Toronto; David (Susan
MYKETYN),
New Glasgow, and her grandchildren, Jennifer, Gillian, Tom, David,
Jeff, Allison, Robin, Christine, Philip and Andrew. We will all
miss her letters, lists and quotes from her father E.J. Visitation
will be between 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 2, in J.A. Snow
Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. A funeral mass will
be held in Canadian Martyrs Church, 5900 Inglis St. in Halifax,
on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at a later date. In
lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pheonix Youth Programs
(www.phoenixyouth.ca), a favorite charity of Peetie's.
