ZABOROWSKI, Eugene▼
Died peacefully, January 18th, 2008, in his 94th year, after a brief illness at Guelph General Hospital. Born January 6th, 1915, in Tuapsc, Russia, on the Black Sea, Eugene was raised and educated in Poland. He served as a 2nd Leftenant in the Polish Army - Artillery, was captured by the Russians in 1939 and survived the Soviet Gulag labour camps to join the Allied Forces where he trained as an Royal Air Force navigator. In 1950, he immigrated to Canada and settled with his wife Janina, in Oakville, Ontario. He worked for Sun Life Insurance, Dufferin Construction and St. Lawrence Cement until his retirement. His zest for life was evident in the great pleasure he found in the art and craft of every day living. He built his own homes (Campbellville and Erin), raised a menagerie of animals, and grew a thriving garden of fruits and vegetables, all destined for the table. His repertoire also included making his own sausage, smoking bacon, baking his own rye bread, pickling mushrooms, fishing, and telling riveting stories of his war years. He loved languages, tutoring his family and Friends, reciting Polish poetry and practising Russian, until his death. He also loved a good joke, a good drink, a challenging game of bridge, and a rousing discussion with his best friend Ludck Kraszewski, in equal measure. His tender devotion in caring for his wife, Janina, for 15 years after her major stroke, continues to be an inspiration to all of us.
Eugene▼ was predeceased by his wife Janina▼ (Dr.▼ ZABOROWSKA 2000) he is lovingly remembered by his daughter Eva ROSS (John,▼) son Mark (Kathleen JONATHAN,) and grandchildren Jason ROSS (Heather▼ SMITH,) Jenna▼ VEENSTRA (Dave) and Amanda BELL (Josh,) ten lively great-grandchildren - Gage, Nolan, Jett, Preston and Jaxxon ROSS and Danielle, Jacob, Joanna, Sarah and Rebecca VEENSTRA.
A memorial service will be held at Saint_John Brebeuf Catholic Church on Saturday, January 26th, 2 p.m. at 24 Millwood St. Erin, Ontario with reception to follow. The family wishes to thank the Guelph General Hospital and Riverside Glen staff for their gentle care in his last days.

Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Glenn (Brenda) ZABOWSKI, Karen (Colin) ZABOWSKI, all of Montreal, Robyn BURNS and Heather (Jay) CHAPMAN and great-granddaughter Ava, all of London. Dorothy will also be missed by 1 niece and 2 nephews. Predeceased by sisters Muriel HEATH and Nellie COONEY. Sister-in-law to Bill HEATH and the late Eddie COONEY. John Hobart McLean ANDREWS, born in Kamloops, British Columbia, died peacefully on April 23, 2008, in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Predeceased by his parents John Ernest ANDREWS and Cynthia Maria ANDREWS (née ROBINSON;) sister-in-law Margaret STEELE (née PAYNE;) and infant son Douglas Reid ANDREWS. Survived by his wife Doris Deborah ANDREWS (née PAYNE;) son William John ANDREWS, daughter-in-law Merle ZABRACK, grandchildren Aaron and Naomi; son Donald Wilfrid Kao ANDREWS, daughter-in-law Anne Kao ANDREWS, grandchildren Brett and Alexandra; son Jeffrey Peter ANDREWS, daughter-in-law Virginia DEVONSHIRE, grandchildren Monica, Laura and Georgia; daughter Lorraine Doris ANDREWS, grand_son Graydon; brother William Robinson ANDREWS, sister-in-law Vips sister Ella Mary TAIT/TAITE/TATE, brother-in-law Howard; sister-in-law Eleanor HUMPHREY (née PAYNE,) brother-in-law Al HUMPHREY; and brother-in- law Tom STEELE. John also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces.
John ANDREWS attended Kamloops High School. In 1947, he received a B.A. in Physics from the University of British Columbia, where he met Dorie, the love of his life. He and Dorie were married on August 28, 1948. After teacher training, they taught at various small schools in communities such as Squamish and Salmon Arm, British Columbia In 1955, they packed up little Billie and Donnie and drove to Chicago, where John received a Ph.D. in the new field of Education Administration from the University of Chicago in 1957. Choosing to return to Canada, they moved to Edmonton, where the arrival of Jeff and Lorraine completed the family. John was a Professor of Education Administration at the University of Alberta from 1958 to 1965. In 1965, the family moved to Toronto, where John was the Associate Director of the newly formed Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. In 1973, John and Dorie and family returned to their British Columbia roots. John was the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia from 1973 to 1980, and remained a Professor there until his retirement as Dean Emeritus in 1985. John held a deep personal and professional commitment to the public education system both in Canada and around the world.
Perhaps John's most inspirational accomplishment was his total devotion to Dorie after she suffered a severe stroke in 1990. Together, Dad and Mom remade their lives, travelled the world, doted on their grandchildren and cared for each other through all that came their way.
Special thanks to John's caregiver Alicia Rhodes, who brightened Dad's final years.
Family and Friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 2: 00 p.m. at First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, B.C.

Of the community of the Sisters of Saint_Joseph of the Diocese of London Ontario died peacefully on July 4th, 2008 at Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. At the age of 83 years Sr. Alice was in her 59th year of religious life. Lovingly remembered by her sister Isabelle EBY of Kitchener and brother-in-law Larry ZAHARA of Brighton, Ontario nieces, nephews, devoted friend Barbara MARQUIS and the Sisters of her religious community. Predeceased by her parents Victor CAZA and Agnes (SOUCHEREAU) and her sister, Agnes ZAHARA. Alice spent over 38 years as an educator in Windsor, London and Sarnia. Following her retirement from teaching, she volunteered in Various outreach ministries. Since 1990, Alice ministered to women at Elizabeth Place in Edmonton Alberta. She gently and humbly lived her vows as was demonstrated by her life of grace and strength of faith. Her Sisters in community remember her for her prayerfulness and her gift to communicate with others. Peacefully passed away July 8th, 2008 at Markham Stouffville Hospital at the age of 87 years. Survived by her devoted husband Dan following 60 years of marriage. She will also be missed by her children Gary (Catherine) and Geoffrey (Martha) of Calgary, sister Ann KOSNER, and grandchildren Jason, Sarah, Andrea, and Bradley. Born in Montreal, Phyllis is predeceased by brothers Joe, John and sister Mary. The family would like to thank Union Villa Long Term Care for attending to her needs over the past few years. Stabbing ends 20 years of peace for Afghan couple
Police detail fatal attack at Brampton mall

Brampton, Ontario -- They called him Papa around the Planet Ford dealership, although Rahim SHAHGHASY was just 53.
The nickname just seemed to fit Mr. SHAHGHASY, a car detailer with a fatherly manner whose love of friendly chatter came a close second to the fondness he held for his wife, Nazifa, and their two grown children.
Yesterday, those children, along with Friends, relatives and neighbours, struggled with a horror at odds with the peaceful life the couple had led since leaving Afghanistan for Canada two decades ago: their violent deaths outside a Brampton strip mall at the hands of a seemingly crazed man they didn't know.
"This man was armed with two knives and the attack was completely unprovoked," Inspector Norm ENGLISH of the Peel homicide squad told a packed media conference.
"The husband saw what was occurring and attempted to save his wife, but was overpowered by the male."
The 28-year-old assailant remains under police guard in hospital recovering from serious knife wounds he inflicted on himself after the noon-hour attack on Wednesday outside the Red Maple Plaza.
The incident was initially thought to be a marital dispute in which a woman was killed along with a male passerby trying to help her, but police amended their theory yesterday.
Insp. ENGLISH said Ms. SHAHGHASY had just made a dental appointment at the plaza and was walking to her car when she was accosted by the knife-wielding man, who was "very well known" to police, though a stranger to her.
Her husband, meanwhile, had made a quick trip into a small grocery store in the plaza. When he came out, he saw his wife being attacked and ran to her.
"Both victims suffered fatal stab wounds and died at the scene," Insp. ENGLISH said, adding that Mr. SHAHGHASY first made his way, bloodied, into another business in the plaza to ask a merchant to call for help.
Police arrived to find the assailant stabbing himself in the neck and used a taser to subdue him. His condition, described as critical but stable yesterday, has prevented police from questioning him and has delayed the laying of second-degree murder charges. His name will be withheld until that happens, likely in the next few days, the officer said.
The suspect, a Brampton resident, was out on bail on a charge involving violence, which Insp. ENGLISH would not disclose.
Autopsies will be conducted today and the funeral will be held as soon as possible, in keeping with Islamic custom.
The circumstances of the triple stabbing, which pushed Peel's homicide tally for the year to 11, are being examined by the province's Special Investigations Unit, which probes all police-related confrontations resulting in death or serious injury.
"The victims are wonderful people who were outstanding members of our community," Insp. ENGLISH said.
The impact on the community was evident in the parade of vehicles that converged yesterday on Siesta Court, a quiet cul-de-sac of 13-year-old homes where the SHAHGHASYs bought a tidy, brick-clad two-storey house for $415,000 in 2006.
Their home, about 10 kilometres from where they died, was often the scene of happy gatherings, but yesterday, relatives and Friends wept and embraced in the street, while news reporters and a few neighbours looked on.
"The family is in a state of shock," said Shawn JAMSI, whose wife is Ms. SHAHGHASY's sister. "My wife has been in the hospital, back and forth" from the shock, he said.
Ms. SHAHGHASY ran a clothing store in Brampton, and "I'd always see her dress up really professional with a briefcase or a purse, and I always thought, 'wow,' said neighbour Christina SASSO.
Yesterday morning, Ms. SASSO watched as the couple's 19-year-old daughter, Kubra, prepared the outside of the house for the onrush of grieving kin.
"I just saw her sweeping the driveway, the dirt; I was just watching her, just sweeping and sweeping," Ms. SASSO said. "It looked like she was in a daze, and it just brought tears."
Mr. SHAHGHASY had been slowly but steadily recovering from a workplace accident about two years ago, neighbours said. He had been using a walker to get around, but had recently moved up to a cane.
"I said, 'I'm so happy to see you like that,' and he said, 'Yes, I'm doing really good,' Gorretti ANDRADE, who lives a few doors away, recalled from an encounter three weeks ago.
The couple's positive outlook and good humour came up time and again in interviews with those who knew them.
Giovanni ZAMBITO, who lives next door, recalled them as "probably the nicest people I ever met, to tell you the truth."
Gurpreet VANDER, also a neighbour, broke into tears upon learning what had happened. She said Mr. SHAHGHASY often played with her children and would stop on the way to get his mail and chat, since they both spoke Urdu.
"No other families understand our language, and we don't understand their language," Ms. VANDER said. "So sometimes we would talk."
Mr. SHAHGHASY's penchant for talk was well known to several car dealers in the Brampton Auto Mall along Bovaird Drive, where he cleaned cars in preparation for delivery. He most recently worked at Planet Ford, while the couple's 22-year-old son, Qaiss, is a salesman at a nearby Mitsubishi dealership.
Between phone calls in the showroom yesterday, a young receptionist at Planet Ford described the elder Mr. SHAHGHASY as a wise man who, despite being unable to work recently, would drop in to share stories of his Afghan childhood or dispense fatherly advice.
"He would tell me stories about how he was raised back home, and how he met his wife, and how he loved his wife," she said.
Yesterday, his co-workers found themselves in the same state of sad confusion as the couple's relatives and neighbours.
"I couldn't believe it; it was devastating," Julee FARIAS said from behind her desk in the service department. "We did love him."

Passed away at Etobicoke General Hospital, on Sunday, May 11, 2008 in his 82nd year. Born in Hengelo, The Netherlands, on November 10th, 1926. Survived by his sister Ali VAN DER VEER (Jan;) sister-in-law Dini, niece Lya (Jan), nephew Niels (Gehe) and extended families. Predeceased by his first wife Johannna ZANDWYK (née SUKEL,) sons Michael ZANDWYK and Kasey ZANDWYK-DE HAAS; and great-grand_son Kristiaan HENN. Survived by daughter-in-law Doreen ZANDWYK-DE HAAS; grandchildren Grant (Robin,) Tracy and Kristiaan (Laura) great-grandchildren Kalob, Kegan, Kayden and Rebycka. Survived by his cherished wife Dorothy MILLER (née BURNHAM,) children Stuart (Karen) MILLER and Valerie (Tony) RODRIGUES; grandchildren Ariane, Alexander and Avalina. Josef will be greatly missed by family and Friends. Visitation at the Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W.
