YOUNGSON, Lois
Mother, volunteer, nurse, teacher. Born September 16, 1924, in Winnipeg. Died September 29, 2007, in Bowen Island, British Columbia, of a stroke, aged 83.
By Maggie COX, Page L6
Lois YOUNGSON lived her life helping others and giving back as a nurse, mother and volunteer.
She started spreading her magic at an early age by volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross at 13. The experience sparked a passion for medicine and taking care of people. Lois went on to study nursing at the University of Manitoba. She became a nurse at Winnipeg General Hospital, helping to heal people with her energy, enthusiasm and laughter.
In 1948, Lois married the love of her life, Gordon YOUNGSON, whom she had met at university. They moved to Toronto and then to Vancouver. She continued nursing and volunteering when she arrived on the West Coast, and managed to have five kids in her spare time - Nancy, Cindy, Donald, David and Scott.
Lois and Gordon, their five kids, dogs, cats and bunnies lived a life of sharing, laughter and love. They taught their kids that life was about giving back.
Tragedy struck in 1980 when their youngest son, Scott, passed away of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at 18. In the wake of the immeasurable pain a parent feels when she loses a child, Lois turned the loss into a positive. She worked with the Canadian Cancer Society to create Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp where kids with cancer can just be kids. The camp started out with just a few children and volunteer nurses and doctors. Twenty-plus years on, it has blossomed into an escape near Maple Ridge, British Columbia, for hundreds of children, teens and families.
In the 1990s, Lois teamed up with her "sixth child," Brenda Eng, a pediatric oncology nurse, to help create Canuck Place Children's Hospice in Vancouver, a hospice for children with progressive life-threatening illnesses. It offers respite, palliative and bereavement care. From her own experience, Lois knew that most terminally ill kids and their families want to be at home, and Canuck Place became their home away from home. Like Camp Goodtimes, Canuck Place has helped hundreds of children and their families make a difficult time a little bit better.
Lois spent her life making other people's lives better. She won a number of awards for her work, including a national volunteer award, but she wasn't an "awards person" and wouldn't take any credit for them.
She passed away peacefully with Gordie by her side, an example of what true love and real partnership is all about.
Lois wouldn't want anyone to sit and mourn her passing. She would want all of us to get up, brush ourselves off and give back. Her four kids and nine grandchildren have a lot to live up to.
Maggie COX is Lois's granddaughter.
