WOODLEY, John, P.Eng.
John WOODLEY passed away peacefully at Providence Healthcare on Tuesday, January 29th, after a long and valiant struggle with Multiple Systems Atrophy. 6'4' of brain and brawn, of kindness and common sense, John was a towering presence in the lives of his family and Friends. From humble beginnings on a farm in Northumberland County, he graduated from Engineering at Queens University in 1970 and became a Canadian Patent Agent in 1973. In the years that followed, John rose to international prominence as an expert in the patenting of inventions in fields of chemical engineering, biotechnology and health care - inventions which memorably included the Cystic Fibrosis gene, the early on-set Alzheimer's gene, the Muscular Dystrophy gene, and the cloning process which created 'Dolly.' He co-authored 'Hughes and Woodley on Patents' and the World Intellectual Property Organization's 'Guide on the Licensing of Biotechnology,' and served as the President of the Licensing Executives Society U.S.A./Canada in 2000/2001. Uncounted hours of John's time were spent in the mentoring of young patent agents and licensing professionals around the world. Equally at home in the barn and the boardroom, John never met a person or a tractor he did not like. He knew a lot about everything. He could reduce the most complex technology to the elementary. He could build a house and plough a field. If it was mechanical, he could fix it. He could explain and correct your faulty tennis stroke or ski technique at a glance. He could dance to Strokin' It. He had an inexhaustible supply of energy, goodwill, patience and power tools. And no end of inappropriate jokes, in which sheep and bears always figured prominently. He was irrepressible and irresistible. John is survived by his adoring wife, Rita, who brought joy to his life and whose devotion and strength sustained him in his long and difficult illness, his daughter, Anne, son J.J. and his wife Melanie, granddaughters, Sierra and Janine, the apples of his eye. Also his step-son Ben and his wife Kim, his sister Donna, and her husband Norm, his niece, Sheri and her husband Andre and his great-nieces Brianna, Emma, and Renee. Also other family, Paulette, Jim, Ronald, Debbie, Pierre, Mercedes, Kim, Doris, JohnJames, Drewe Bob and Jeannine. And, of course, his admiring partners at Sim and McBurney and an international host of Friends and colleagues who will miss his commitment, his wise counsel and that booming laugh. John was lovingly cared for by Catherine Armoo, Lexie Mason Harty and the wonderful nurses and staff at Providence. A memorial service for John will be held at Jubilee United Church, 40 Underhill Drive, Toronto on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 1: 00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at the Donalda Club, 12 Bushbury Drive, Toronto. John's family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, his Friends and colleagues consider a contribution in John's name to the Parkinson Society Canada (1.800.565.3000).

SIM, Gordon Edward Royal
(October 4, 1952-March 9, 2008)
Our dear friend Gord passed away peacefully, at home, during his Sunday afternoon nap after a long, courageous and dignified fight against cancer. He was triumphant in the face of inevitable defeat for he valued Friendship above all else, and the value of his Friendships was never more unassailable than at his life's end. Kind, loving, fun, surprising, honest, dedicated, dependable, all those wonderful qualities bundled into one great person. Predeceased by his father and mother, Clarence and Dorothy SIM and nephew Richard REID. He is survived by his sister Patricia REID (Don,) nephew Rod REID (Heather) and their children Parker and Brooklyn; Uncle and Aunt, Ted and Celia GRIGG, cousins Janine LEACH/LEECH/LEITCH (Peter), Kenneth GRIGG (Sue) and Catherine FREIVOKH and their families, and his godchildren: Morgan McCONVILLE, Scott TINDLE, Willie SCOTT, Peter SEHMER, and Taylor JACKSON. Gord had an incredible circle of Friends from every spectrum of his rich life, but in particular his family would like to thank his oldest Friends for their support and care in the last year: John and Mary McCONVILLE, Blake and Dorie POTTINGER, Maud KILLAM, Cathy NOEL, Margaret ROBINSON, Robyn WOODWARD, and Peter ARMSTRONG. The support and love Gord has had from his many Friends in the class of 1970 at St. George's, colleagues from his years in federal politics, and from Friends at Rocky Mountaineer Vacations has been much appreciated. We would also like to thank Doctor John Sehmer, and the physicians and staff of the British Columbia Cancer Agency. Gord's political career began with the Young Conservatives of Canada. He graduated from University of British Columbia - Class of 1974 and worked for many years for the Hon. John Fraser, P.C., O.C., OBC, Q.C. in Ottawa and Vancouver before joining the Rocky Mountaineer Vacations as a train manager for the last 14 years. Gord served on the boards of numerous community organizations and was a life long participant in the campaigns of many civic, provincial and federal candidates. Gord looked as great decked out in his kilt for the Sir John A. MacDonald Society as he did riding with Friends at Douglas Lake. A bit of a George Hamilton, our Gord liked to tan year round either in some exotic local or on the sunny shores of Savary and Gambier Islands. He enjoyed traveling, watching the Canucks, celebrating the achievements of loved ones, and cooking dinner for Friends. He has left us with amazing memories. 'How wonderful life is when you're in the world' surely was written for our Gord. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gord's memory to the British Columbia Cancer Foundation. A service in memory of Gord will be held at Saint Mary's Anglican Church at 2490 W. 37th in Vancouver on March 25, 2008 at 3: 00 p.m.
