For those blessed to have been taken into Michael's heart he
made us better and stronger people. Being his friend meant that
you were the recipient of sage advice, sometimes hard to hear,
but always spot-on. His compassionate spirit and caustic humour
made for delightful visits. All Michael demanded in return was
that we be the most we can be. His Friends miss the man but do

WOOD,
Eleanor▼
Clayton▲
Died peacefully in her sleep on February 6, 2008. She was 88.
Eleanor was born in Saint Thomas, Ontario and graduated from the
University of Western Ontario in 1941. She moved to Toronto and
worked for Maclean Hunter magazine. In Toronto, she met Cecil
WOOD an engineering student, on a blind date. They were married
in 1948.
Eleanor was a happy, vivacious and active mother of 3 who adored
her husband and soul mate of 60 years. She loved tennis, bridge,
travelling, walks with her family and skinny dipping in the early
morning at the family cottage in Muskoka. She was actively involved
in her local church through the altar guild and other activities.
Eleanor adored her 3 children, their spouses and her 7 grandchildren
and was much loved by them in return. A love of books was her
other passion. Once her children were in high school, she returned
to school and became a library technician, and then worked at
Aurora High School for many years.
Eleanor left many gifts to husband, family and Friends. Her ability
to love unconditionally and to surround people with her love,
will be remembered by all who knew her.
Perhaps her grandchildren said it best. "Grandmas make life more
beautiful". We love you and will miss you always.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations being
given to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, 350 Michael Cowpland

WOOD,
James
Douglas
(December 13, 1928-June 7, 2008)
It is with great sadness that the
WOOD and Bretsen family announce
the passing of Jim
WOOD.
Father, grandfather, friend and self-proclaimed
husband, Jim is best remembered for his enthusiastic embrace
of his life's passions. His love of music was manifest throughout
his life. Jim played piano and sang a sweet high tenor, he enjoyed
many performances of the Canadian Opera Company and Elmer Eisler
Singers, and he supported and bequeathed the Mendelssohn Choir.
Jim encouraged music education in his children, grandchildren
and Friends supporting 15 of them with gifts of new pianos over
his lifetime and supporting his children's participation in the
Royal Conservatory and the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir. Jim
fondly remembered his part in the Bob Quartet at Victoria College
of University of Toronto, from which he graduated in 1953. Having
spent his early years training to be a minister of the United
Church, Jim left the church for a career in education. He taught
shop, English and drama during the early years of York Mills
Collegiate. Promoted to department head, then principal, and
completing a Masters and Doctorate, Jim became a Professor of
Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto.
A handyman and weekend builder throughout his life, Jim lovingly
designed and built a small farmhouse and barn overlooking Creemore,
Ontario. The unparalleled view from the floor to ceiling windows
captured Jim's attention and those of all who visited. Often
with a hammer in his hand and always with a pencil behind his
ear, Jim willingly helped his family and Friends with renovations
and upgrades, delighting in the design and completion of every
project. His handy skills helped him cope with maintaining not
only his farm but four other properties including a large Madison
Avenue rooming house where he kept rents very low to help University
student tenants. His intellect and vast range of interests made
him a modern renaissance man. Admired by his Friends and relatives
he will be dearly and sorrowfully missed. Jim is survived by
his loving partner Ferne and his three children Joel, Seana and
Matthew, as well as their mother, Ryl and sister Margaret. He
was a loving grandfather to Vincent, Stefan, Sophie, Lucas, and
Zoe. Jim was the
son of Joseph and Cora
WOOD of Stratford. A memorial
celebration of Jim's life will be announced soon for early August.
Please contact 416-960-1941 for details. Memorial donations to
music or arts charities are appreciated.
