It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother,

Norah"
Stuart (née
SIMPSON)
Matriarch, gentle role model, quiet saint. Born around June 3,
1917, in Edinburgh. Died August 14, 2007, in Toronto of cancer,
aged 90.
By Adam RENNIE,

In Edinburgh during the First World War, Marion Scott
CUNNINGHAM
gave birth to her 11th child. Unlike three brothers before her,
the child survived - ach, she must be a strong one.
She▲ was born Eleanora Stuart
SIMPSON. By age 6, she and her family
moved to Bolton, Ontario
Norah, as she was known, grew up and lived most of her life in
Toronto's west end. Her father was a tailor and a strong role
model. His views on parenting were clear: "Never hit your kids
on the head," he told her, and she never did.
She remembered all the rites of passage: her first kiss ("which
was after my first steak on a bun, and even better than the steak")
and her first cigarette ("I discovered it was possible to be
sneaky, daring, nauseated and have a death wish at the same time.").
She married in her early 20s and had four boys - Jim, Rob, Ross,
and Dave.
In 1954, hurricane Hazel swept through Toronto. The market gardens
where Norah's husband, Andy, worked were flooded, so he was out
of a job. She said he was never the same afterward. He and Norah
eventually separated because of his increasingly abusive behaviour.
Norah's unplanned independence didn't daunt her; she maintained
her calm demeanour. For a long time, she worked as a waitress
at Simpsons. When she had too many tables to look after, Norah
had a foolproof tactic. As soon as her customers started to look
impatient, she would stop by and ask if they had been served
yet. "You haven't?" she would say in shock. "Well, your waitress
must not be paying attention. I'll just take care of you." They
always tipped her a little extra for being so considerate.
Cunning aside, Norah's selflessness knew no bounds. For more
than a decade she worked as a nurse's aide at a sanatorium for
tuberculosis patients. Her dedication to the community seemed
to grow with age - when she wasn't helping at a charity thrift
shop, she was volunteering with her church group. When she wasn't
knitting socks or a blanket for a new grandchild (hers or a stranger's),
she was helping other people in her building with their grocery
shopping.
Lying in her hospital bed with terminal cancer, Norah remained
her indomitable self. When the doctor delivered the news that
she didn't have much longer to live, she took his hand and said,
"This must be very hard for you."
Norah compared her life with those of great women and thought
it paled in comparison. She saw herself as a tailor's daughter
who never had a proper education or career - not as the daring
and independent role model that she was.
Adam RENNIE is Norah's grand_son.

BRANDT,
Robert "
Bob"
Wardell
Dearest Bob, We have been so lucky to know you - a great gentleman
who cared for others in so many ways. You were a straight for
ward genuine good guy, having a positive impact on many lives
with an unassuming graciousness, an indomitable spirit but with
a bit of mischief now and again. Great respect was earned by
you with your intelligence, integrity, common sense and fairness
to all. With your quick wit and famous Bob Brandt humour (just
ask the staff) you could brighten up a discussion. You loved
problem solving from puzzles to broken equipment and management
issues. The challenges captivated you. Classmates from Ontario
Veterinarian College '70, Guelph named you their Class President
and we have been fortunate to rendezvous every 5th year to renew
those Friendships with gusto. You enjoyed opening new clinics
in St. Vital and The Pas, working on Veterinary Boards and church
organizations, the camaraderie with the curling team, the eventful
and sometimes fateful fishing trips, bonding while hunting at
the farm when you had your licence, the sometimes hospital bound
but fun ski trips plus exploring and observing nature while hiking
and biking far and near and special summers with family and Friends
at the lake. Travel was a big part of our life, especially in
your semi-retirement as we set out to explore and to meet new
and old Friends. Your family was very special to you. You were
born to Doctor Marvin and Martha
BRANDT (both deceased) in The Pas
then moved to Dauphin, Manitoba; studied at the University of
Manitoba then Ontario Veterinary College before settling in Winnipeg
to work at St. Vital Clinic and then Birchwood Animal Hospital.
You had great visions and Birchwood grows again. We will sure
miss you with all of that warmth and charm. Wife - Barb; daughter
